I'm sure there's some modern-day equivalent of the Love Rug, which GiggleSugar recently uncovered. There must be some piece of furniture that substitutes as a furry lover, which, as the copy for this ad so eloquently states, "As you stroke, it strokes. . . . It's almost like having another lover there with the two of you." I'm sure there's probably something similar, but I'm not going out of my way to find it. Source

I detest halitosis as much as the next person, but since when does that mean I should have to sit on my breath freshener of choice? Just because you can turn any round product into the seat of a stool doesn't mean you should. I think I have to go separate ways with "art engineer" Lee J. Rowland and his Sweet Seats Mint Stool (inquire for price) on this one. That is, unless I were trying to furnish the corporate offices of Breathsavers. I'm sorry . . . am I being harsh? Tell me what you think of this mint-inspired stool.

What is it with men and designing female-shaped furniture? At first, I thought it was kind of funny. But really, the sex-centric furniture is just everywhere these days; it's getting kind of ridiculous. Exhibit A is the 1960s Female Form Fiberglass Chair ($10,500), a chair that proliferates the animal-hide trend, and takes the classic Louis XV chair to a "sensual" level — kind of like a dirty version of Philippe Starck's Louis Ghost Chair. I must say I'm a little confused by the back of this chair though; this lady looks to be double-jointed. What do you think? Funny or misogynistic?

Weird Furniture: Paperback Chair

When you were deciding what you were wanting for your reading nook, you probably hadn't considered a chair made of paperback books. Myopic Books, a neighborhood bookstore in Providence, RI, did though. On display in their shop is this wacky chair made by artist David Karoff. With the exception of the wheels, all of the materials used to build the chair were recycled, including scrap metal and books from the discard bins at the local library. To keep the books in place, Karoff drilled holes through them, and slipped them onto the chair's (hidden) metal frame. I kind of love it, especially for a bookstore, but don't think it would work in my home. Would it work in yours?

Weird Furniture: The Worker Chair

You know that I love Hella Jongerius. But, sometimes her designs can be a little kooky. Take, for example, the Worker Chair made by Vitra. The design combines some crafty elements (stocky compact seat cushion and half-timbered structure) and other more technologically sophisticated elements (polished aluminum arc stand, wooden armrests); overall, the contrast is a bit unsettling. Beyond that, the back seat pillow fittingly, though unattractively, looks like a briefcase. I'm sure all the design fiends have kissed Jongerius's feet for this piece, but I don't see the appeal. Do you?

Weird Furniture: Mommy's Chairs

You'd better sit down for this. What you're looking at is not a child's drawing of a dinner table. On the contrary, Lucy Merchant's Mommy's Chairs are in fact real chairs, made of powder-coated recycled steel. According to Merchant, the sculpture-like seating is meant to "represent the spontaneity of a rough sketch." It's interesting to see that a design inspired by a doodle, a type of drawing that's inherently unpolished, can be so flawless; the visually trickery of this furniture is astounding. And, if the spindly shape of the chairs wasn't enough to confound expectations, the Crayola-box colors of the designs further demonstrate their inspiration. In this case the cliché couldn't be more true: things are not always as they seem.

Weird Furniture: Globus

Although I've been feeling globe shapes lately, I must say the Michiel van der Kley Globus ($8,775) is one big piece of weird furniture. It is described as a "compact personal mobile workstation," but is basically a desk and and chair on wheels in a big white ball. Its rotating chair and pull-out table top are revealed when you crack open its globe shape, and you can close it up and roll it away if you want to work in another room. Honestly, I think a laptop is a much more versatile "workstation," and they don't look like something out of Barbarella or Google Zurich. What do you think? I generally don't think of myself as much of a traditionalist, but I guess I'm making an exception for the Globus.

For the next round of this challenge, I'd like you to take a look at this French Mountain Region Sculptural Dog Chair ($7500). Hand carved in 1910, this piece of furniture is unusual, to say the least. It's made from walnut, and by the looks of it seems quite substantial. I think this odd chair could really make an impact in the right interior.

So, my question for you is how would you use this canine chair in your home? What room would serve it best? What other accents or furniture pieces would help it to blend into a room? Or would you want it to stand front and center? Tell me by commenting below!

Weird Furniture: RD4 Chair LE*

I'm all for one-of-a-kind furnishings, and anything eco chic, but despite those truths, I could never bring myself to put the RD4 (Roughly Drawn) Chair LE* ($1,548), a limited-edition piece hand woven from 100-percent recycled plastic waste material, with no two exactly alike in my living room. The chair certainly makes a striking visual statement, and is modern in an interesting way, but it's too overwhelming for my home. I'd love to see it in the Manhattan Beach home with the green staircase that I recently wrote about, but can't think of another home it would work in. This chair claims to be "a tour de force piece heralding the future of sustainable design." Do you agree? Or do you think that eco-chic furnishings should be limited to those sustainable designs that appeal to a wider public?

Found It! Alexander McQueen's Table

Recently reading a Fashionologie post on designers Dries Van Noten and Alexander McQueen's Spring 2009 collections, I couldn't help but notice the glass-top table in the photo of McQueen glaring back at me. If you're scratching your head wondering why it looks familiar to you, that's because it is. The table is a life-size sculpture of a woman as furniture with fetishist and sado-masochist overtones designed by British artist Allen Jones in 1969 as part of his very famous "Hat Stand and Table" series. I featured his Chair sculpture in the series, which sits in London's Tate Gallery, as a Weird Furniture post not too long ago. In the mid-1960s, the Brit Pop painter, sculptor, and printmaker found inspiration in the human figure, and created provocatively erotic works that were meant to arouse an emotional response in the viewer — McQueen's table, otherwise known as forniphilia, is an extreme example of this technique. We all know that money doesn't grow on trees . . . but furniture does! Well, in the ground, at least. That's right, you can literally grow your own lawn furniture. ReadyMade has instructions on how to grow an outdoor couch, which requires little more than some dirt, sod, and wooden stakes. Forget green sofas and mattresses, this couch will literally produce oxygen! Just don't try to have it recovered in five years, your upholsterer
might get a little freaked out. Oh, and "Note: Couch may require mowing."

Weird Furniture: Rodolfo Rocchetti Custom Furniture

Master upholsterer Rodolfo Rocchetti from Rome's Tappezzeria Rocchetti definitely has a great imagination. Rocchetti has made many other well-upholstered, blend-in-anywhere pieces of furniture, but these four sofas are definitely exceptions to that. I'm not sure where you'd put any of these pieces. Maybe Siegfried and Roy need a tiger sofa for their Vegas digs? Or perhaps a Greek architecture aficionado is dying for a replication of the Colosseum in sofa form? While the company's website asserts that "Rodolfo Rocchetti handmade articles are all exceptional, exclusive, refined, and tasteful," I'm not sure if I can get on board with that last adjective. These are definitely unusual, but a black panther sofa with chain around its neck is not my idea of good taste. What do you think of them? And where do you imagine them residing?

Artist Peter Gronquist opened a solo show,"The Revolution Will Be Fabulous," at LA's Gallery 1988 this weekend featuring his designer knock-off weaponry. NotCot was there and got a peek of his Louis Vuitton electric chair ($4,500), a "traditional" wooden electric chair printed with company's monogram and made with LV buckles used for wrist and ankle straps. The general consensus seemed to be that the quality of the chair, as well as other pieces like PacMan hand grenades and a peacock-feathered Gucci gun, didn't meet the standards of the brands they tried to emulate. Forget conversation: Fumiaki Goto's Music Dining Table (inquire for price) allows you to rock out while you're chomping down. Built like a marimba, with copper bars inserted into its wooden bars of various size, which have holes, the table sings by amplifying the sound of the wooden bars like a loudspeaker. Each time you place your wine glass back on the table (if you're like me, often), the table will elicit different tones, depending on how much pressure is applied to various areas on the table's surface. I'm all for eco-living, but I can just see something disastrous happening with this toilet/washing machine combination. I have a hard enough time keeping loose socks off of the floor when I put the laundry in the hamper after washing. Can you imagine what would happen if I tried to empty The Washup? This design is still in the concept stage, and it does have a lot of cool ideas going for it. The design is based on the premise that there's absolutely no reason to put fresh, potable water in the toilet, so why not recycle wash water as toilet water? This water-saving idea is great, but I don't see any reason why the washing machine itself can't be moved a bit further away from the toilet bowl. Maybe we'll see that re-design in the Washup 2.0.

What's for dinner? The Precious Famine (inquire for price) limited-edition coffee table, made of entirely hundreds of pieces of Christofle silverware, was designed by Toni Grilo of Portugal/France-based Objection Design. While it's most definitely crazy, impractical, and possibly dangerous, I appreciate its inventiveness. I assume it's made from newly manufactured Christofle silverware, but I like the idea of recycling objects in your home for an entirely new purpose. Do you have any silverware or cutlery laying around to repurpose? What else could you make from old knifes, forks, and spoons?

Molo's Softseating ($130- $2,390) is made entirely from kraft paper with 50% recycled content. The paper is cut into a honeycomb-like structure that flexes to fan open into stools, benches and loungers. Not only is it flexible, it's versatile and compact; you can compress it like a book for easy storage. It was also recently acquired by the New York MOMA for their permanent collection. I can see the appeal of Softseating in a public space — it's fun, eye-catching, and memorable. But would you want this in your home?

Luflic, pronounced "loo-flick," is the Old English word for "lovely." Although it's inventive and certainly memorable, I can't say I'd love to sit on the Luflic in the Round chair (inquire for price), which is named after the technique of knitting socks or sleeves. The tubular steel frame that makes its shape is formed in one continuous line that closes in a loop, and thirty feet of crocheted sleeve are required to upholster the entire thing. What do you think? Is it too peculiar for your living room or do you think the knit is neat?

Oh, and it weighs more than most small children, at just under 60 pounds. The upside? When you're out of money after spending it all on this chair, you can always chip off a few half-dollar pieces to buy your next meal.

This furniture is the antithesis of Straight Line Designs' handle, and may actually be, believe it or not, more reserved than the other works you'll find in their portfolio. The Canadian company designs whimsical custom furniture that takes on a life of its own. More often than not, it's built for child's play, but they're often commissioned for trade show booths, movie and TV props, and retail environments.
Shown above (clockwise from top left) are the "Bad Table," "Daddy Long Legs," "Melting," "Accordian," and "Burnt Leg Table." Not surprisingly, designer Judson Beaumont cites his influences as Walt Disney, Dr. Seuss, Warner Brothers, Pee Wee Herman, Philippe Starck, and Frank Gehry, as well as Saturday morning cartoons. He also does not like green eggs and ham.

Weird (and Cool) Furniture: Fill in the Cat

NEL, an evolving collective of Mexican designers, came up with the interior design-oriented art project "Fill in the Cat," which was executed by artists Ricardo Casas, Héctor Esrawe, Emiliano Godoy, Cecilia León de la Barra, and Óscar Núñez constructed a line of furniture/art pieces that feline fans will find to be the cat's meow. Explaining their creation, they write:

Three characters disappear from large, solid white blocks, and their absence suddenly makes them important. The resulting emptiness is filled with the user's belongings and through this action the silhouettes' meaning shifts. The pieces suggest a continuous play between interaction and representation, where daily use generates a continuously changing story: a cat that reads Italo Calvino, a book filled with coins, a living room where birds come to eat the cake's crumbles. . . .

This furniture, which was completed in 2006, was shown at Salone Satellite. Along with additional pieces from their furniture line, all made from expanded polystyrene (EPS). Perhaps if enough of us request it, this piece will go into mass production.

The Octopus Chair (price unlisted), fashioned from pairs of recycled jeans and polystyrene balls, is a multi-shape beanbag and a cross "between a chair and a lounge sculpture," allowing you "to adapt your seating to your interior." In some cases of weird furniture, I am willing to suspend my inclination towards normalcy in favor of something that is "weird" yet still cool and "artsy." But dear Mr. Octopus, I do not like you, find you cool or artsy, or care that you can transform into multi-shapes. Weird Furniture: Mario Philippona Design (NSFW)

Dutch sculptor Mario Philippona developed a series called "Sexy Furniture," which mimics female forms in challenging wood. These shapes, he writes in a statement on his website, are "the most attractive in nature," and have inspired him. He designs his works on life-size working drawings and assembles his sculptures from pre-cut layers of wood, so that they're anatomically correct. He sees perfectionism, he writes on his site, "in the way women use fashion, high heels, fitness, and plastic surgery to portray themselves," and cites artists Allen Jones and Salvador Dali as inspiration. His works are finished with natural oil and wax and handcrafted from regional timber, the colors and textures of which he uses to emphasize his forms.

This year I often amazed (and more often disgusted) you with my weird-furniture posts. Whether it was a bench made of pencils or a chair made of a sheep's head, you always had something to say about it, and for that I say thanks! Reading your comments was at least as fun as seeking out all of those odd pieces of furniture.

Here are some of my favorite weird-furniture posts this year:

The sheep's head chair was one of those things that made you go ew(e).
Looking like something out of a horror movie, the meat chair gave us both the chills.
Luckily, the pencil bench made everything cute and pleasant again.

Weird Furniture: Philippe Starck Tooth Stool

Philippe Starck has never let me down before. In fact, I pretty much fall asleep every night by counting his Louis Ghost Chairs. But the Tooth Stool (price unlisted), which he designed for Saint Martins Lane Hotel, is too much of a mouthful for me. The stool comes in three lacquered-metallic versions: gold, silver, and copper as well as one version in batch-dyed silver gray. If it were my style, I'd say the gold tooth is the only way to go.

Phillip Watts has given new meaning to the term buggin' out with his Caterpillar Bench ($8,507), a three-seater bench of highly-polished cast aluminum shaped to resemble the leaf-eating larva. Weird Furniture: Road Tested Chair

This John Carter Road Tested Chair ($3700) is created from two working New York City Don't Walk/Walk signs, comes with a remote control to turn them on and off, and plugs into a standard AC outlet. It can come as is, with all the grit that New York City is known for, or with a fresh coat of taxi-cab yellow paint. The seating surfaces have been reglazed with thick resin and cushioned with felt suspension. It certainly doesn't look cushiony to me, which I would excuse if a piece of furniture were easy on the eyes, but this one is just plain weird.

Weird Furniture: Modern Pipe Coffee Table

Timothy Adams, a self-taught metal artist hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, designed this Modern Pipe Coffee Table, which moonlights as a bench "in the right setting." Weird Funiture: Mac II Couch

Here's a creative upcycling solution for outdated computer equipment. This couch is constructed from 20 Macintosh II computer. The Mac II couch is fastened together with drywall screws, and is sturdy and, according to at least one tester, more comfortable than this looks.
