This Just In: Cost Plus World Market Celebrates 50 Years

Cost Plus World Market is kicking off a weekend of in-store events and shopping today at its flagship San Francisco store (2552 Taylor Street) to benefit local schools, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, running through Sunday, Oct, 26. Those of you in the Bay Area who stop by will enjoy live entertainment, product giveaways, food and drink samplings, winemaker bottle signings, henna painting, and more. There will also be a live broadcast of KGO-AM’s Gene Burns of “Dining Around With Gene Burns” from the store from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Chef Ryan Scott of Top Chef Season Four will host a cooking demonstration. I don't mean to be materialistic, but one of the best things about traveling is the shopping! I love returning from a vacation with home goods or clothing that no one else has, that makes people say, "Where did you get that?" OK, I guess that's superficial. These days, thanks to the grand old Internet, we can shop internationally with just the click of a button. So many of my favorite home décor shops, such as Graham and Green, are based internationally, so it's nice to have the option of ordering online. But, pricey shipping costs and longer shipping times are kind of a bummer. Do you shop online internationally? Source

Nice and New: West Elm's Nailhead Upholstered Headboard

I love the mix of rustic undyed jute fabric with the more distinguished use of nailhead trim in this Nailhead Upholstered Headboard ($399 for queen) from West Elm. It practically screams (or maybe, more appropriately, demurely purrs) glamour au naturel. I wouldn't mind dressing up a bedroom with this headboard.

Ordering online is so effortless these days, it's practically the only way I shop. And, although I like to steer clear of malls and boutiques for fear of temptation, there is value in shopping locally. Obviously, it cuts out shipping costs. But you also know what you're in for when you shop in-store. Luckily, I haven't had too many experiences with orders arriving broken when I shop online, but this is not true for all. A good friend of mine just purchased a television stand which not only arrived broken but completely missing several pieces. What a headache! She now says she's sworn off online shopping for good. What's your experience? Source

I don't know about you, but I'm a staunch believer in sale shopping. For the most part, I rarely buy things that are not on sale, partly because I know that great deals and steals abound (and where to find them), and partly because I'm aware of the high mark-ups retailers put on their products. But sometimes, I come down with a fever of spontaneous splurges . . . and then I encounter a bit of buyer's remorse. I've always been someone who puts a lot of consideration into her purchases, be it a ballpoint pen or a new sofa. How about you? When it comes to shopping for your home, do you make rash purchases, or do you deliberate on them? Are smaller purchases, say an accent pillow or a candle holder, more chewed over than larger ones, like furniture? Tell me by commenting below!

One of the most sensible ways to deal with clutter (and consumerism) is to abide by this rule: "Every time you bring something new into your home, something else must leave." Since I bring you wonderful home décor products day in and day out, you'd laugh in my face if I told you to stop shopping — wouldn't you? But, if you get in the habit of recycling or donating one possession before you bring home another, you'll not only prevent clutter in your home but you might actually feel good about yourself. That's not to say that when you finally save up for an ottoman, you should get rid of your matching armchair, but you should routinely get rid of things you genuinely don't need or want. Just as you'd organize your desk, keep an outbox of things you can part with. It's the only healthy way to purge.

This Just In: Yanko Design Opens an Online Store

All you design junkies out there probably know Yanko Design, which is a great blog devoted to the modern aesthetics of technology, interiors, architecture, and industrial design. Now comes the news that Yanko has opened an online store filled with crave worthy designs.

Yanko partnered with a number of luxe brands, including Eva Solo and Umbra, to fill out its inventory. The store features everything from computer accessories to the Sumo Omni Lounge ($149, above left) I blogged about a while back and this very cool Rosendahl Wine Tube ($99, above right). This Just In: Moss Store Opens in Los Angeles

Moss is a swanky store in New York that toes the line between design mall and museum. Products by various designers are often displayed behind glass, and the mix of limited-edition creations is often quite bizarre. (The online store even has a section entitled Extreme Other.)

Now, founder Murray Moss is taking his sleek and cheeky aesthetic to Los Angeles. The store's second-ever showroom opens today at 8444 Melrose Avenue, and it sounds like quite a place. Consider this description from the Moss web site:

Moss-starved Angelinos will have their design needs fulfilled come August 3 when the large glass door in our ivy covered front pushes open to an astounding Swarovski Crystal Palace installation (of eighteen 8-foot high Vertical Glitterbox chandeliers by Georg Baldele) surrounding a 1938 Steinway Baby Grand fire-sculpted by Maarten Baas.

Like so many things in LA, this sounds like a place to see and be seen as much as a place to shop. Even if I can't afford anything in Moss, I'm dying to check it out.

This Just In: Sleep Over at the Ikea Hostel

Anyone who has ever been to Ikea knows that it can be a very tiring shopping experience. But get this: According to The Guardian (U.K.), shoppers in Oslo will get to stay the night at Ikea hostels, so customers can have a place to crash if they haven't finished shopping. According to the article:

Later this month, Ikea Norway will let shoppers sleep overnight in one of its two Oslo warehouses, an operation that will last a week. "It will be like an alternative hostel," said company spokesman Frode Ullebust.

"There will be the regular dormitory with lots of beds stacked up together. We will also have a bridal suite, with a round bed and a hanging chandelier, and the luxury suite, where customers can enjoy breakfast in bed," he said.

Guests will be allowed to stay free of charge and will even get to chow down on the usual Ikea grub — like Swedish meatballs and cranberries — for breakfast and dinner.

I personally like to get in and out of Ikea as quickly as possible, though a trip can admittedly take hours. But apparently, Norwegians see it as a major tourist attraction, so I guess it makes sense to add dorms. Would you spend the night at an Ikea?
