Before and After: Thrifted Headboards Get Glam Update

When Country Living editors Larry Bilotti and Robin Long Mayer discovered twin headboards at a garage sale, they grabbed them for $10 total, with the idea of transforming them into something new. Taking a cue from the indented panel in the headboard's design, they brainstormed ways to highlight this feature.

Whenever there's a scene in Mad Men involving the Drapers' bedroom, my eyes are always drawn to their tufted velvet headboard. Its color, texture, and tufting are over-the-top feminine, and reflect nothing of Don's removed masculinity. But maybe that's the point of this headboard — to reflect how removed Don Draper is from his home and its contents and inhabitants. Photo Courtesy of AMC

Nice and New: West Elm's Nailhead Upholstered Headboard

I love the mix of rustic undyed jute fabric with the more distinguished use of nailhead trim in this Nailhead Upholstered Headboard ($399 for queen) from West Elm. It practically screams (or maybe, more appropriately, demurely purrs) glamour au naturel. I wouldn't mind dressing up a bedroom with this headboard.

Cool Idea: Painted Stripes Headboard

I've written about painted headboards before (and even DIY'd my own), so it's really nothing new. But, I am loving how design firm Shelton, Mindel & Associates made the entire wall behind this sleeping space a focal point with bold stripes, and within that created a focal point above the headboard by painting stripes in a slightly lighter shade than the rest. This look is really easy and affordable to achieve in your own home. And, if you don't have a real headboard of your own as this room does, the rectangle of lighter stripes can serve as a headboard alternative. What do you think?

I recently spotted tin ceiling tiles used as a headboard in the portfolio of photographer Aimee Herring, and fell in lust! I've always found intricate, tin tiles particularly beautiful, and have thought about using them as a backsplash in my kitchen, but never in the bedroom. It probably doesn't make for the most comfortable headboard when you're sitting up reading at night. And some of you may say it's just not your style. What do you think? Source

Room Therapy: Help Me Make My Bedroom More Livable!

Hi Casa,

I'm a student who recently moved into a huge four-bedroom apartment with four other girls. We converted a den into a bedroom, which also means that my room opens into the sunroom. While there is a lot of space, there isn't closet space anywhere. I have questions about making this space more liveable.

How do I get hanging space on the cheap? I only have one more year of school to go! And don't want to spend too much money.
I inherited a really old bed (no headboard) and was wondering what's an easy/cheap way to make it look nicer?
The sunroom has huge windows that overlook the street. I love the sunlight but the lack of privacy makes me nervous especially since it's on the first floor. Any way can I create some privacy while still maintaining sunlight?

Inspiration: a Headboard à la Hermès

On a recent stroll through San Francisco — okay, I may have been shopping —an Hermès window display caught my eye. Sadly, they were not giving away free Kelly bags, just a little inspiration. What was once a backdrop for designer duds, a series of strips of varying tones of green linen, cut to resemble safari grasses, was the source of a home décor revelation. Paired with a leafy, botanical print quilt or duvet, the backdrop could be used as a headboard to create a bit of a jungle theme in a bedroom. I think the project would a cinch to pull off — starching the fabric and adhering or stapling it to a piece of wood behind, which would then be attached to the base. This airy, honeycombed octagon headboard from west elm (regularly $299-$399, on sale for $99.99-$139.99) looks like just the place to rest my head, or to prop with pillows as I sit up and read long into the night. Available in either beet or chocolate colors, this all-hardwood headboard is a great deal, and a lovely one at that.

Simple Style: Paint Yourself a Headboard

A headboard can really be a great focal point for a bedroom, and just because you own a regular ol' bed doesn't mean it can't have a regal backdrop. So if you don't own a headboard, why not try painting one on?

I'm loving this idea from Point Click Home, and it would be very easy to recreate. Simply paint a block of color the width of the bed, and add a small stencil in another shade for a fun bit of detailing. Has anyone tried this at home? If so I'd love to hear about it.
