At the same time, the couple traveled to flea markets, antique stores, and salvage yards to find turn-of-the-century hardware, lighting, beams, doorknobs, and even hinges! Tom Wolfe, author of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, The Right Stuff, and numerous other fiction and non-fiction books, is a best-selling American author and one of the founders of the New Journalism movement. Immediately recognizable for his trademark white suit, of which he owns 40, and which he has worn for over 40 years, Wolfe's apartment is also instantly identifiable. Thanks to the numerous Wolfe portraits and sculptures scattered around his abode, this apartment is as trademarked as the man and his writing style. Living on the water is nothing new; it's been a tradition in many cultures for ages. And, of course, societies have developed by the water for logistical reasons. Naturally, many people also want to live near the water to take advantage of all the activities it has to offer, and for the view. In areas surrounded by water and in densely populated urban centers with high real-estate costs, permanently living literally on the water in a houseboat just makes sense. Unfortunately, though, traditional houseboat designs have left much to be desired. So, design label Confused Direction, based in Oldenburg, Germany (which features the most important noncoastal harbor in Lower Saxony), teamed up with carpentry company Schreinermeisterei to develop a residential boat that balances both good design and maritime romance. "Das Schwimmhaus" has the same fresh and elegant look of Confused Direction's furniture and interior designs, but departs from nature-inspired curves and waves towards a more angular look.

Laurel, a visual artist who works in low-relief wall pieces, bought her two-bedroom, one-bath 1928 Craftsman home from her grandparents five years ago. Since then, the space has been extensively renovated and personalized. Coveted(?) Crib: The House That $1.75 Bought

A woman from Chicago is the proud winner of the eBay auction of an abandoned home in Saginaw, MI, according to Saginaw News. Her high bid? $1.75. Thirty-year-old Joanne Smith went up against seven other bidders to claim the house, but she has no plans to move there. "I am going to try to sell it. I don't have any plans to move to Saginaw. I don't have any plans of moving from (Chicago)," she says. This is not the story of the homes in Sicily selling for one Euro, though. The abandoned home is in disrepair and has changed hands seven times since 1999. And, as it turns out, the real cost of the house is a bit more than a buck-75. Smith must pay back taxes on the house and a trash/weed cleanup bill by March 31, setting the final price. To see this Saginaw home,

This six-bedroom chateau in Limoges, France sits on its own grounds with a wooded area on the entrance side and a garden with an orchard, a fountain, and a pond on the other. Architecture firm S. Russell Groves gave this picturesque historic barn on an expansive estate in rural Connecticut a top to bottom renovation, including extensive cabinetry and state-of-the-art audio-visual systems. The original, naturally distressed, wood beams and wide-plank flooring, which were restored and then offset with custom and vintage furniture, patina finishes and heavily textured fabrics, are the home's most wonderful treasure. The building's unique high-ceilinged structure creates an unreplicable feeling of openness, and the property's lush greenery and rolling hills make for a pristine, pastoral setting. Perhaps the most famous architect of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright left behind a legacy of fascinating houses, as well as amazing sketches for homes that were never built. In 2007, one of these sketches, for a home to be built into a large piece of bedrock on Lake Mahopac in upstate New York, was finally designed and constructed. Owner Joe Massaro hired architect and Wright scholar Thomas Heinz to flesh out the design from only five original sketches. To see the results, check out the slideshow. Source
