Cool Idea: The Float Bed

If you want to add some old-fashioned romance to your boudoir, look no further than the French Country Bed (queen on sale for $539, regularly $899). While it may look a little bit like Brocade Home (though of course, Brocade claims that there's nothing country about their French furniture), the price is significantly cheaper. From the Chris Madden For JCPenney Home Collection, this whitewashed bed features woven cane and is constructed from solid wood and molded resin.
I think that the whitewashed, ornate frame would look great when paired with a more streamlined bedroom — maybe some steel gray painted walls and unfussy linens. How would you integrate this bed into your boudoir?

Room Therapy: Help Me Make My Bedroom More Livable!

Hi Casa,

I'm a student who recently moved into a huge four-bedroom apartment with four other girls. We converted a den into a bedroom, which also means that my room opens into the sunroom. While there is a lot of space, there isn't closet space anywhere. I have questions about making this space more liveable.

How do I get hanging space on the cheap? I only have one more year of school to go! And don't want to spend too much money.
I inherited a really old bed (no headboard) and was wondering what's an easy/cheap way to make it look nicer?
The sunroom has huge windows that overlook the street. I love the sunlight but the lack of privacy makes me nervous especially since it's on the first floor. Any way can I create some privacy while still maintaining sunlight?

So, I've just been given this Ikea bed, and it completely doesn't work with my style or my apartment. It was free though, so i couldn't turn it down. I'd love to do something creative to cover up the metal headboard, as my style is more bohemian florals than industrial minimalism! I'm looking for some inspirations...any suggestions?

Recently, I was reading about your significant others' cleaning efforts around the house in the Housecleaning Support Group on TeamSugar. Cocoangel shared that her husband is actually a good housecleaner. My favorite part of her comment, though, was her observation that, "[t]he best thing is that a few years ago I pointed out that I couldn't make the bed until he got out of it, which is usually anywhere from one to two hours after I get up. So we instituted the 'last one out of bed, makes the bed' rule. I love it!"

If you're living with somebody special, but you're tired of always making the bed then I suggest you try Cocoangel's bed rule in your household. It'll either make you get out of bed earlier (perhaps making more time for a morning workout), or improve your technique with hospital corners. It's worth a try!

For the next round of this challenge, I'd like you to look at this Canopy Bed Attributed to Phyllis Morris ($15,000). It was built in the 1970s and has been painted a matte white. Now, this thing just screams "tacky" to me (unfortunately high price tags do not equal high style). So, my challenge to you is to class this bed up. How could you make it more elegant? Would you paint it? Get rid of the canopy? What type of linens would you dress it in? Tell me by commenting below!

I wouldn't normally recommend a futon-esque furnishing, but the PBteen Convertible Couch ($799, reduced from $899) is actually quite handsome. Its midcentury lines and button tufting give it a mature look — a significant departure from what the words "convertible couch" bring to mind. But, it's true, it does convert to a full-size bed in a couple of clicks. If you're a midcentury modern fan, and you can work with the coffee or shoreline-stripe color options, this one might be for you. And if you're working on decorating your studio, it's an ideal space saver.

Room Therapy: A Bed For Our Guests

Hi, Casa!

I am at a loss, and I'm hoping you or other Sugar readers can help me out. I recently moved from a spacious apartment to a tiny townhouse. My husband and I decided to make the larger of the two bedrooms into a joint guest bedroom/office. The only problem is our guest bed is a queen! We are definitely tight for space in this room, and a pull-out sofa or futon seems like the ideal solution. We've started our search, but everything seems so expensive (after moving expenses, we really can't afford to go over $200 or so on an "optional" piece of furniture). What can we do? We crave our office space and I definitely cannot give up my bookshelves, but we still want friends and family to be able to visit and stay with us. Please advise!

Good, Better, Best: Ball-Topped Wrought Iron Daybeds

A sofa by day, and a guest bed by night, a daybed is a versatile space-saver. Traditional Victorian style wrought iron daybed frames were originally handmade well before metalworking machines became available. So unless you're shopping antique stores, most wrought iron daybeds you find will be reproductions. I use the word "wrought" broadly; it actually suggests that the metal was shaped by hand, which, again, you're unlikely to find shopping franchise retailers. But you can let that slide, right? Antique, handmade daybeds may be cherished collector's items but that doesn't mean reproductions are an eyesore; they're often quite handsome. I've rounded up a selection for you to give you an idea of what's out there at various price ranges. The three that I chose are nearly identical in shape, though they have different finishes, and most likely have a variance in quality as well. Oops, and they're also actually made of steel, which means they're lighter than their iron predecessors.

Good: You can't get much cheaper than the Ikea TROMSNES ($179) bed. A classic shape, there's nothing frugal-looking about it. But Ikea beds are not known to be the most stable, and Ikea's products often take several hours to set up. The white finish is cute for a beach cottage or a girl's bedroom, but I don't see this agreeing well with testosterone. Unlike my "Better" and "Best", this bed does not have the option of a trundle underneath.

I admit it: I have a slight obsession with daybeds, and this Canopy Daybed with Trundle (originally $1,229, on sale for $999), is absolutely no exception. This looks like the bed I want to sleep in when I visit some well-to-do distant maiden aunt's country home on a breezy summer weekend. I'd snuggle up, pull the canopy curtains, and plunge into a dog-eared copy of one of my Jane Austen novels. Do you find it as dreamy as I do?

Hello, drama! I can't help but think that if you called this bed your own, something edgy would happen in it. Hivemindesign's Rune Bed ($14,000), according to its makers, "creates a dialogue between the geometry of the form, with an implied cube that reflects its ornamentation into itself." In other words, it's really cool, edgy, and expensive. I personally love the way it courts modern spareness while alluding to more fussy and ornamental traditions. The bed is custom-made of solid poplar, so expect a lag time when you order one of these babies. But then again, you'll probably need some time to save your pennies to pay for this expensive, incredible bed.

Get the Look: A Cashmere Mafia Bedroom, The Bed

You might have caught my Get the Look recently of Mia's office in Cashmere Mafia. Well Mia, played by Lucy Liu, isn't the only one with sweet digs, Zoe and Eric have a fab modern bedroom, too. Here's what Production Designer Stephen Hendrickson had to say about it:

The upstairs bedroom of Zoe and Eric continues the cool, spare, modern aesthetic seen in the modern style of the rest of the renovated Village townhouse. Light toned wood flooring, pale colors, and a modern line to the furnishings, reflect Eric's architectural style.

Personally, I think you can never have too many pillows on your bed — or anywhere, for that matter. At one point, I actually had 12 on mine; it was fun to push them off before hopping under the covers. But some people like the clean look of two pillows, folding a matelassé over them, hotel style. I've been eyeing the PBteen Maison Campaign Bed ($499-$799) for some time now, and I am happy to report that its price has been reduced significantly. I love how its feminine curves are balanced by hand-hammered solid iron, making it subtly elegant, rather than overly baroque. I'm also loving how those minimal, crisp white sheets draw attention to the graceful shape of the bed. PBteen notes that its canopy is open to let a chandelier hang down; how beautiful would that be? Gosh, if only I had higher ceilings.

Every once in awhile, I encounter a furnishing that literally blows my mind. That time is now. The Conran Shop Ball Poster Bed ($17,000) is dramatic, unorthodox, and downright eye catching. This exclusive Conran Shop design reinterprets a traditional, unassuming four-poster bed with burnt- and waxed-ash balls stacked to create posters, completely stealing the show. I'd love to see it against an accent wall with patterned wallpaper like Ferm's Waldots, although it speaks volumes in any setting. Do you love it?

I've been coveting this Gustavian Bed ($1995 for a queen frame) for months now. Its combination of simplicity, elegance, and sturdy craftsmanship makes it seem like the perfect compromise for a couple who are looking for a classical gender-neutral bed. According to VivaTerra's description, this bed was inspired by Sweden's King Gustav's visit to France about 250 years ago. The king returned to his Scandinavian country obsessed with ornate French neoclassical design, which was then re-interpreted with a more streamlined Swedish design sensibility. This bed is made from reclaimed Douglas fir that's up to a century old, which makes this new piece look like a lavish antique.

While this bed requires more room than the average bed, I think the great lines and swaying motion would make up for that loss of space. And it probably would come in handy for some bedroom romance as well.

Spotted on AT:SF, the Niermann Weeks Valois Canopy Bed ($19,330) is pure luxury. Made of Venetian silver leaf with antiqued mirrored panels, it's more feminine boudoir than art deco design, and it's yet another reason to love mirrored furniture. Fit for a queen, for yours truly, or just anyone with 20 Gs to spare, it more than qualifies as Crave Worthy. I particularly love its icy gray-blue headboard; I wonder what material it's made of. Can't you see Princess Anne from Roman Holiday taking a snooze in this four-poster?

Cool Idea: Hide-a-Bed Couch

At first glance, the couch on the right, featured on Marie Claire Maison, looks like a typical modern loveseat. But thanks to my wonderful (but somewhat rusty) French language skills, I've deduced that this is not the case. Half of the bed actually disappears behind the the closet doors, whose bottom has been sawn off. Dear Casa,

I purchased a round bed from Ikea about two years ago. My boyfriend and I moved in together shortly after and neither of us wanted to get rid of our own bed. My bed has been sitting in the living room taking up space. We do occasionally let his daughter use it when she sleeps over. Do you have any ideas on how I can make this bed look more like a couch when we have guests over just to hang out? When I purchased the bed the description did say that it can be used as a sofa or couch, but I have no clue where to start aside from getting small throw pillows.

Crave Worthy: Inova Table Bed

Having lived in a studio apartment with a Murphy bed, I must say there is something very satisfying about neatly folding up the mattress and shutting the doors when you need more space or when guests arrive. This Inova Table Bed takes the idea a step of further, transforming into a pull-down table when the bed is put away.

Available in twin to king sizes, the freestanding piece would be great in a studio apartment — instant dining room! — or in a guest room that doubles as an office. My favorite little touch is the shelf behind the bed and the space for hanging artwork. What do you guys think?

Definition: Murphy Bed

Ideal for living in small spaces, a Murphy bed is an otherwise normal-sized bed that folds up into an alcove, an armoire, or a closet for storage. The mattress is attached to the bed frame — often with a strap or bolts — and does not use a box spring. It usually folds up at the head of the bed to be concealed by a pair of doors.

Often, you'll find Murphy beds built into studio apartments or other small rooms, and you can also buy wall beds to install in your home. Murphy beds are named for William L. Murphy, who held the first patent on the design in 1916.

Crave Worthy: Creme Fresh Celeste Bed

Here's a modern update of those canopy beds that we dreamed about as little girls. The sleek and modern Creme Fresh Celeste Bed is a tent-like structure that serves as a cocoon for peaceful sleeping, and it also creates a sort of instant bedroom if you live in a loft. I have no idea how much it costs, but hey: Just because I'm all grown up doesn't mean I can't still dream of canopies.

Crave Worthy: Mobelform Doc Sofa/Bunk Bed

As a kid, it was really cool to have a bunk bed, especially if it was covered in something even cooler, like novelty sheets featuring The Smurfs or the Transformers. But this Transformer-meets-bunk-bed totally kicks the ass of all those other forms of coolness. I mean, really, how amazingly awesome is this Mobelform Doc Sofa/Bunk Bed?

Priced at $6,840 for the regular size and $8,660 for the extra-large version, this metal sofa bed converts from a couch to a bunk bed in just a few fluid movements. Yes, it is expensive, but awesomeness like this doesn't come cheap. Here's what it looks like in action:
