Midday Muse: Bathtub Envy

There's a lot I love about my bathroom, from its vintage blue-and-white floor tiles to its ample storage. However, one thing I'm not so in love with is our bathtub. It's deeper than most tubs, but it's still nothing as luxurious as this silver-leaf freestanding tub. Everything about this room is so darn alluring, which isn't something I can say for most bathrooms. I've got serious bathtub envy going on right now.

Midday Muse: Vast Bath

In this Tuscan farmhouse, the architect designed the bathroom like a lounge, blending styles and eras as you might a living room. The old clawfoot tub is centered in front of the window for a relaxing view, and there's little else, aside from a tall cabinet shelving essentials and an armchair, to clutter up the space. While the blue walls and tub, terracotta tiles, and rustic copper faucet certainly create a beautiful palette, it's not the style or color of the room that attracts me — it's the size. I'd easily sacrifice some square footage in my bedroom or living room to claim this vast bath.Of course the cool tones create a soothing atmosphere, but the room's magnitude puts me in a happy place. In most homes, our bathrooms are not much bigger than a coat closet, and there's something so claustrophobic about that. I suppose in a way the composition of our homes speaks to what we value in our society; in most cases, our garages and living rooms are the largest spaces. Are cars and TV what's most important? Sometimes I think we need to reassess. Forget prime time, if I were the owner of this home, I'd take a nice long soak and curl up with a book in this private retreat any day.

The Cosmo Bathtub (about $4,580 US) comes equipped with massage jets and a 17-inch flatscreen television. I, for one, don't associate television watching with relaxing baths, but maybe I'm just a Luddite. Would you soak in this high-tech tub?

This Red Diamond bathtub from Water Games Technologies ($47,000) costs more than my car did (by quite a bit). It's red, high tech, and a little outrageous. But would you love to put it in your home if given the chance?

Who doesn't like to read in the bathtub? Antonio Lupi's Biblio free-standing bathtub has a bookcase built around it, to provide storage for all of your bathtub tomes. I love the idea, but can't imagine books weathering the humidity too well. Source

If you don't have time to mix up my bath and tile recipe for clean, good news: There's another project that will get the job done. In a recent comparison study on environmental site Grist, writer and assistant editor Sarah van Schagen tested eight different green cleaners to see which one scrubbed the tub with the least amount of elbow grease and the most shine. And out of the fancy— and expensive — brands she tested, she ultimately found that a very simple product got the job done the best. The product? Borax. In case you're unfamiliar with this product, borax is made up of a naturally occurring mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. It's biodegradable and green, and a great, economical choice for your cleaning and scrubbing needs. "Forget complicated ingredient lists, fancy spray bottles, and flowery fragrances," advises Sarah in the article. "We suggest you join Team Borax and use the power of 20 mules to get bathroom surfaces sparkling for little effort and even less moola."

Less moola is right: A 76 ounce box of 20 Mule Team Borax costs an average of $4.49, while an 11 ounce box of Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Surface Scrub will set you back $5.99. That's about 6 cents an ounce for the Borax, compared to 54 cents an ounce for the Mrs. Meyers.

Casa Query: What's One Thing You'd Change?

In general, I love my bathroom. It has adequate storage, a cute tiny-tile vintage white-and-blue floor, and a big, deep tub. (Oh, and a superefficient dual flush toilet.)

But if I could make one change to my bathroom, I'd trade out our big, deep tub for a more elegant and aesthetically lovely claw-foot tub. We had one when I was a little girl, and what can I say? I've never gotten over my romantic attachment to them. Maybe I'd even paint stripes on it.

What would you do to change your bathroom for the better?

My heart just skipped a beat when I saw this Kohler Striped Cast-Iron Claw Foot Tub (price unlisted) on AT:LA. Not only does it fulfill my life-long yearning for a claw-foot tub, but its cheerful, modern stripes would give my white bathroom a much-needed perk, and its ornate feet bring on the antique glam. I'm sure the tub is no where near affordable, but maybe using boat paint on a slick new tub could achieve the same look. Do you love it as much as I do?
