While I do applaud the Wallflower Wallrack (inquire for price) for doing without the use of screws, dowels, or tools (it stays stable thanks to four elastic buffers and a steel leg), its stainless steel leg is a space hog. And, at seven in the morning, when you're half-awake entering the bathroom to wash your face, the chance of tripping on that protruding leg is a real possibility. But . . . at least it looks cool.

How-To: Insulate Your Water Heater

Even though we've already wrapped up (har har) House Warming month, I thought I'd show you how to insulate your water heater. After all, Winter's still ahead of us, as are those expensive heating bills. This project improves your hot water efficiency by keeping water in the pipes warmer, delivering hotter water when you run the hot faucet. This way, you're effectively wasting less water since the tap isn't running tepid water when you want hot water.

It's a really easy task, and you'll be able to find the supplies needed at your local hardware store. Make sure to read the manual that goes with your water heater, though, because some manufacturers preclude insulating their heaters. You should also be particularly cautious if you have a gas heater, as it could cause a fire. To learn the steps,

She writes, "I'm due in just over two weeks and we decided we need to repaint some rooms in our house now . . . We bought our house six years ago. If you saw TeamSugar member Halsig's brilliant lighting design and her impressive kitchen remodel, I'm sure you have no doubt that she's taken that design goodness to other areas of her San Francisco loft as well.

In fact, her remodel of her oh-so-basic bathroom, which she called "a gas station bathroom," might just be what impresses me the most. She installed a Thassos white marble vanity, a Thassos marble white floor, a sleek partition for the toilet area, lights that turn on when the door closes, and a six-foot-long Boffi Makro Cherry Red Glass bath tub with inset marble cubbies. The result is something so high design, it looks straight out of a W Hotel — a far cry from an Exxon bathroom. To see for yourself,

There's a lot I love about my bathroom, from its vintage blue-and-white floor tiles to its ample storage. However, one thing I'm not so in love with is our bathtub. It's deeper than most tubs, but it's still nothing as luxurious as this silver-leaf freestanding tub. Everything about this room is so darn alluring, which isn't something I can say for most bathrooms. I've got serious bathtub envy going on right now.

Before and After: RJ Thornburg's Getaway Bathroom

Self-declared "anti-decorator" RJ Thornburg, one of our Designer Spotlights, brought his design talent and a lot of flea market finds to his Pennsylvania 1860s farmhouse weekend retreat, which was in need of major renovation. Before then, though, the bathroom was decorated in typical Pennsylvania country style — lots of florals, dark tones, knick-knacks, and (gasp!) a toilet seat cover. Thornburg transformed it into a relaxing, light-filled escape with clean, white walls, a classic, freestanding tub, and lots of artwork. And, he turned the small alcove area into a lounge by setting a comfy cushion there.

In this Tuscan farmhouse, the architect designed the bathroom like a lounge, blending styles and eras as you might a living room. The old clawfoot tub is centered in front of the window for a relaxing view, and there's little else, aside from a tall cabinet shelving essentials and an armchair, to clutter up the space. While the blue walls and tub, terracotta tiles, and rustic copper faucet certainly create a beautiful palette, it's not the style or color of the room that attracts me — it's the size. I'd easily sacrifice some square footage in my bedroom or living room to claim this vast bath.Of course the cool tones create a soothing atmosphere, but the room's magnitude puts me in a happy place. In most homes, our bathrooms are not much bigger than a coat closet, and there's something so claustrophobic about that. I suppose in a way the composition of our homes speaks to what we value in our society; in most cases, our garages and living rooms are the largest spaces. Are cars and TV what's most important? Sometimes I think we need to reassess. Forget prime time, if I were the owner of this home, I'd take a nice long soak and curl up with a book in this private retreat any day.

Su Casa member Erin84 recently gave the "ugly 70's-style bathroom" in her new condo a major overhaul, and the transformation is a vast improvement. We've seen an influx of striking outdoor rugs this year, made from polypropylene that can be hand washed or hose cleaned in second but with the good looks of an indoor rug. That's great and everything, but I want to know when a bath mat is going to come along that's not simply white and furry. Who decided that bath mats had to be plain and oh-so-boring? I'm eager to see a rug that's not only as good looking as those we'd put in our living or dining rooms but can also dry our drippy feet after a shower. Are you out there, designers? Please answer my call. Or, am I missing something? Does what I'm looking for already exist?

I love design that solves minute daily frustrations, like wiping off the condensation of my mirror after every morning shower. But a pet peeve of mine has always been that car wipers don't wipe off the entire surface of the window. So while I think the Suck UK Wiper Mirror (inquire for price) is clever, I haven't been won over by it. I think I'd just prefer a heated bathroom mirror instead.

Cool Idea: Metal Interiors

Are you into adding some heavy metal to your house? I'm not suggesting you start listening to Black Sabbath, of course, but that you experiment with some unusual materials. Take this ribbed metal wall, which I found in Australian architect Cathy Spratt's portfolio. She used metal walls for this beach house bathroom, which lends a vacation-oriented feel to the room. This is such an unexpected and interesting design element, which I think would work perfectly in a beach house or summer home. I'd love to experiment with metal walls. Casa Quickie: Limit Your TP

An electric toilet paper dispenser by Kimberly-Clark Corp. automatically doles out only five sheets (squares) of toilet paper to those who use it away from their homes (in airports, schools, offices, etc.). According to one article, they believe "most people will be satisfied with just five sheets — and use 20 percent less toilet paper in the process." It would be silly and extravagant to have an electric tp dispenser in your own home. But, if you follow this five sheet rule, you'll save a lot of trees in the process of . . . you know, wiping. I'm just waiting to see toilet paper cut into 20" strips (5 sheets) for sale to the general public in super markets.

This photo, from the portfolio of Martyn Thompson, exemplifies an urban-meets-rural aesthetic that is often attempted, but rarely successfully implemented. Not so with the owner of this masculine (and luxurious) bathroom. The tufted chair, industrial fixtures, and salvaged sign are a surprising complement to the rough-hewn wide-wood floors and elk antlers. I wouldn't doubt that the owner of this abode is someone whom I might have a little something in common, given our shared taste in décor.

I'm pretty torn over vanities. On one hand, there's a timeless elegance to them, particularly beautifully crafted antiques, and the thought of taking the time each day for yourself to use one is a pleasant one. On the other hand, wake up! It's the 21st century, and who has time to sit and fawn over themselves in front of a vanity, let alone put on mascara looking in the rear view mirror of your car? Regardless of their utility, I think we can all agree that a vanity like this one can add a classic, chic touch to any chambre. Source
