This Just In: John Derian Coming to Target

On Sept. 14, home accessories dynamo John Derian will introduce a collection for Target based on the découpage pieces that made him rise to shelter world fame. The collection will feature antique print imagery like the fruit, flower, and animal prints that Derian typically layers and pieces together under his glass accessories, but instead they will be printed on melamine. "All my designs tell a story. And the prices allow you to live happily ever after," says Derian. To give you an idea of the fairytale prices, a 12-by-12-inch tray will go for $16.99; a set of coasters, $12.99; and a 5.5-inch plate, $5.99. I always love it when Target gets designers involved, and I'm a big fan of Derian's work. But, knowing how easy and inexpensive it is to DIY your own découpage on glass, I think I'd prefer to create the real thing on my own.

This past weekend's hot weather had me craving lemonade and frosty beer. The next time I throw a party, I'll throw ice and bottles into this Cynthia Rowley for Target Steel Beverage Tub ($12.99). Who can resist the funky fresh mix of Macintosh apple red and '80s throwback hot pink? A powdercoated finish makes this pretty tub weather resistant, and its handles enable it to be easily transported beach- or lakeside. But get yours online, because these cute tubs aren't available in stores.

Nice and New: Graham & Brown Wallpaper at Target

Recently reading AT:SF, I was delighted to learn that Target carries Graham & Brown wallpaper. I've always been a big fan of the UK wallpaper retailer, and consistently applaud Target for bringing good design to a mass market, so it's nice to hear that they've made their foray into the world of hip wall coverings. Turns out Target has been carrying Graham & Brown for over a year now, so I guess I'm a bit behind the times. The rolls, available only online, are priced at $49.99 for an 11-yd. roll, and the selection is limited to under 20 designs. As AT:Chicago points out, it might be best to order directly from Graham & Brown where prices are equivalent, you can order samples and the selection is much larger. But, I'm happy to hear about the partnership nonetheless.

Apparently talent runs in the family, as Salma Hayek's brother Sami just launched an exclusive “Sami Hayek for Target” collection, full of cool, colorful, and well-designed products. The collection features home furnishings and accessories that blend contemporary chic with native Mexican culture. The multifunctional pieces are ideal for small spaces and are designed with minimal packaging that’s made to be reused or recycled. The collection includes bedding, lamps, clocks, and unique home-organizing accessories.

I love that the new collection tries to keep things eco by using reusable packaging, and many of the home accessories are just darn cute. The collection ranges in price from 99 cents for a notebook to $149.99 for an office desk, and are just now available at Target. Keep an eye out and tell me what you think!

Word is that Metropolitan Home's latest issue features this pink hose ($10) "designed" by Cynthia Rowley. While the color pink may not make your plants grow any faster, it'll certainly make your yard look good while you do the dirty work! I couldn't find the hose online anywhere, but something tells me it soon will be, or perhaps it's available in store already. This is the kind of product that just makes you go, "Duh! Why didn't I think of that?" I'm sure these babies will fly off the shelves quickly, at least in my local Target! I'll report back if it shows up on the wonderful World Wide Web. Featuring a black-lacquered wood frame, it's five-feet long, so you'll be able to fit a lot of friends around it. It requires some assembly, but this table has received great reviews from a number of customers, including one reviewer who wrote that this table is "Definitely a piece that will last you for many years. Get it while you can, you will not regret it."

The quilt is made from 100-percent cotton with a 180-thread count, and it also features a 100-percent cotton fill, which is rarer than you might think. I advise you to grab one before they disappear from Target's ever-changing inventory.

Steal of the Day: Victoria Hagan for Target Weston Table

This Victoria Hagan for Target Weston Table ($50) is an unbelievable steal. It's a simple, contemporary console table in a cream painted finish that is so basic it would work with most décors. It's also a pretty close match to the west elm Parsons Low Bookshelf ($300) but has a cool crossed bottom instead. Of course, there is some assembly required, and I can't make any first-hand claims to the quality of the piece. But, as far as I can tell, it's just plain good-looking (and cheap).

I like when fashion designers make fab designs more accessible to all at major retailers, and I'm super psyched when they come out with home décor lines. Sometimes they're still a little overpriced, though. That's why I was so happy to find this cute Isaac Mizrahi Pop Flower Topstitch Decorative Pillow ($8.79). It's a little teeny-bop, but in the company of other accent pillows it could add some colorful charm. I love the pink, red, yellow, orange and purple stitching, and think it's a steal for under 10 bucks. You can't even buy a plain, uncovered pillow at that price!

Designer Spotlight: Todd Oldham

Todd Oldham got his start stitching dresses together from pillowcases at age 15, and progressed to designing elaborate gowns for Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. He was, for 15-some-odd years, a fixture in fashion, even hosting a segment called "Todd Time" on MTV's House of Style in the '90s, which focused on America's growing fascination with fashion and the lives of supermodels. Oldham made his segue from the runway to the living room by creating a home and dorm room collection for Target in 2003, and also a line of furniture and accessories for the messiah of recliners, La-Z-Boy, both of which reflect his desire to make smart design accessible to a mass market.

Nowadays, you can see Oldham on Bravo TV as a host of Top Design, delivering challenges and inspiring the designers to be the most creative and original, and he was named the creative director of Old Navy last month. Oldham has also taken his pen to the page, sharing his passion for mid-century modern homes with over 52 do-it-yourself projects, as the author of Handmade Modern. He also designed The Hotel and The Fairfax Hotel in South Beach, Miami. As you can see, Oldham's career has developed to include all areas of design, from interior design, film, and photography, to furniture and graphic art. I can't imagine what's next!

Nice and New: Target's Eco Furniture Line

I am a big fan of Target. So many of its products — especially the Go International designer clothing lines — look more expensive than they are and are well-designed to boot. So I was intrigued to read on Dwell's blog that the retailer now has a line of eco-friendly furniture.

The collection of tables, desks, stands, and shelves are made from FSC/Rainforest Alliance Certified SmartWood with formaldehyde-free and non-toxic stains and finishes. And unlike most of my Target clothes, this furniture is made in the U.S. in order to conserve fuel that would be used in shipping. Cool!

As for the look, well — I have mixed feelings about this stuff. Some of it is very stylish; I really love this Intown Coffee Table in Steel ($329.99, above left). But the furniture with the Slate finish, including Linear Round Cocktail Table ($219.99, right), looks like it belongs in a college dude's living room. What do you guys think?

Yesterday, I gave you a primer on making an emergency preparedness kit. Whether you live in hurricane alley, earthquake country, or anywhere in between, there are essential items you should have around in case of a disaster.
