Su Casa: Art For Joke's Sake

In my post about the new Hygge & West shop, TeamSugar member KateDavis commented, saying that the illustrated frames in the shop's graphic reminded her of one she'd drawn herself as part of a gag on her husband. Of course, I told her I'd love to see her frame, and she posted a photo to the Su Casa group. While her husband was at work, KateDavis hung one of her husband's paintings on their wall and drew an ornate frame around it with a Sharpie. Check out KateDavis's post to learn why her husband may have been less than thrilled to see his work so prominently displayed. It's hard to see the markered pièce de résistance very well in this photo, but it looks like KateDavis has some artistic talent of her own! It also reminds me a lot of Graham & Brown's Frames wallpaper, don't you think?

Su Casa: Whittle03's New Apartment

Su Casa member Whittle03 and her boyfriend just moved to a new apartment near downtown Boston, and although her interior design work is not complete, things are looking great! A successful cohabitation is always a difficult balance when it comes to design, but Whittle03 sounds like she has it under control. She says, "Love is all about compromise. I hate leather, but my boyfriend loves it. So, I tried to find something more streamlined." Clearly, in this living room she's balanced a leather sofa, chair, and storage ottoman with other textiles on her cushions, throw, and silk lamps shades. I think her living room manages not to look overly feminine or masculine. And, although it certainly looks like a cozy lounging spot, it is also quite polished and neat. To see more of her home,

Su Casa member Hippiecowgirl recently spent some time decorating her home for Fall. Among other decorations, she made this Fall wreath for her front door. The seasonal decoration is made from a simple grapevine wreath, some silk flowers, and ribbon. I love how versatile her wreath design is. It's really the color of the flowers and ribbon she chose that make it appropriate for the Fall, but you could always switch up the colors for Christmas, Mardi Gras, Fourth of July, or whatever you're celebrating! You can use a hot glue gun to adhere the flowers, or simply pin them on. Then, when the next season comes along, you can replace the flowers for a different theme. What do you think of this wreath? Su Casa: Sunny Days and Beautiful Blooms

Su Casa member Jessamae22 posted awe-inspiring photos of her sunflower garden. Even though we're bidding the warm weather goodbye, it's good to know that other gardeners are still enjoying their Summer flowers. The photos she took are absolutely stunning, and besides a green thumb, it seems as if Jessamae22 also possesses an artist's eye.

She says, "I have a special spot in my heart for sunflowers . . . they were the first flower that I ever grew from seed. Granted, they are considered pretty easy to grow, but it's still so cool to see just how quickly they sprout and turn into gorgeous blooms! This summer, since we now have a house (!!), I designated a little patch out back for my 'field of sunflowers.' I raked up the dirt, and sprinkled in three different varieties. Not much later, I had my own little sunny spot!"

TeamSugar member DeJaVuE recently remodeled her basement, which had red brick and stone foundation walls and a dreary striped carpet. She installed wood floors and soft beige carpet, as well as drywall, but she kept some stonework on the wall as an accent. Su Casa member Erin84 recently gave the "ugly 70's-style bathroom" in her new condo a major overhaul, and the transformation is a vast improvement. She gutted the space, and then "used subway tiles on the floor and ceramic tiles on the walls." She says, "A new vanity and chandelier make it look like a completely different space." While the original bathroom may not be the biggest eyesore you've ever seen, the new vanity and tiles certainly are much more sophisticated and classic, and the chandelier adds a touch of glamour. Su Casa member Hanako66 recently put in a lot of work to make her yard and garden shine.

She writes,

These pictures were unfortunately not taken in the spring when everything was in bloom, but will give you an idea of what our yard looks like. I still really need patio chairs too! When my husband and I moved in, the yard was completely dirt. We installed all irrigation, plant material, grass, and our pavers all on our own. My husband even built me a planter for my garden! The only item that we contracted out was our concrete.

Su Casa member Amers230 recently shared an inventive solution to her overcrowded closet. She writes, "I recently switched rooms with my sister, and while the room itself is bigger, I lost some closet space in the deal. My bags were literally falling out of my closet and hanging off of my bookcase. I had no idea what I was going to do with them until I got the new Ikea catalog in the mail. Page 202 was my answer. It showed a girl's room with some pan racks hanging on the wall, holding various accessories."

"I also have a small entrance hallway to my room which was just dead space at the moment. I decided to go with three of the Grundtal dish racks because the silver matched other items in my room and it was a bit smaller than the other options. I also ended up buying five five-packs of the matching hooks (which I'm not exactly in love with because the hook portion is actually quite small. I may switch to regular S hooks at some point)."

Su Casa member Katiepwise recently moved to Washington DC, where she's done a fabulous job of making her apartment simultaneously vibrant and cozy. Describing her style, she says, "I love bright colors and am not afraid to use them. I mix Ikea furniture with hand-me-down pieces from family. I attempted a 'salon-style' art wall over my couch and I live to color out just about anything! If I could paint my walls, I would, but since it's a rental, all the walls are beige. Su Casa member Scolls1583 recently snapped some photos at a friend's beach house party in Boston, and was so impressed she decided to share! She says that the host basically built his backyard area "from the ground up . . . put in a pool, built a bar, and decorated with great furniture." I'm certainly wowed by this home; it looks like the perfect place to entertain during an endless Summer. Aside from the obvious coveted Summer features (pool and beach), he's set up plenty of comfortable seating for all of his guests, what looks like a firepit or grill (in foreground), a volleyball net (not shown), and a beer pong table. Su Casa member Demure20 recently posted pictures of her gorgeous dahlia garden, and I had to share them with all of you.

I recently learned, from a kindly gentleman on the bus, that dahlias are the official flower of the city of San Francisco. According to SFGov,

The dahlia, long regarded as the [San Francisco] city flower, was officially recognized as such on October 4, 1926.

The Board of Supervisors in resolution No. 26244 said, "The dahlia partakes essentially of the character of our beloved city, in birth, breeding, and habit, for it was originally Mexican, carried thence to Spain, to France and England in turn, being changed in the process from a simple daisylike wild flower to a cosmopolitan beauty."

This ancient and showy plant was discovered in central Mexico by the Spanish, who sent samples back to Madrid. There, in the late 1700s, the dahlia was given its name by an archbishop to honor Dr. Andreas Dahl, a Swedish botanist, who had studied them in the botanical gardens.

We're in the thick of the Summer Style Contest, and I've received some wonderful submissions revealing your personal Summer styles at home. One creative reader, Haze, launched a major overhaul of her garden and patio in her 1930s Cape Cod-style home in May. In what she calls the "patio reclamation" and "garden refreshment," her husband was "responsible for acquiring the eclectic mix of midcentury pieces that are featured in the space," and she took it upon herself to "refurbish, reclaim, reuse, and repurpose many of these items in order to create a warm and welcoming space with a unique personality." After installing seven pieces of her original modern, surrealist pop artwork, the space took on a gallery feel. Recently, I stayed at my friends' completely eco-chic casa. You may remember reading about it in this post. What makes living in a big, old schoolhouse so eco chic, you may ask? Well, there's the ratio of people-to-square-footage that's involved (the more people that live in one home, the more energy efficient a home is). Then there's the house's emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling. Oh — and also gardening and composting. And last but not least, the crafty chicas who own this schoolhouse are some of the coolest designers I've ever met. This room, the designated guest room, was dubbed "The Room of Restful Sleep" by my guy. I don't know if it was the warm color scheme or the lovely antique bed, but we did have some of the best sleep in recent history in this eco-chic guest bedroom.

When I first ran this photo in a Casa Beta post, reader albelia asked what color the walls were. I thought it was only polite to get back to her — it's Marina Isle, from Behr. But be warned — it is definitely more minty than grey green, and guests have commented that the color seems to change shade before their eyes. I love it though. I love it even more because I used a low VOC base, which helped to make my entry eco chic.

Su Casa: Hazelnut Spread's Nakashima-Esque DIY Table

Well, color me impressed — really, really impressed. The other week, when I answered a reader's question about Nakashima-esque tables, I also read a great message in the comments from Hazelnut_Spread. She shared that she'd actually made this type of table herself.

She writes,

I recently embarked on a DIY project where I crafted a large Nakashima-style (live-edge) coffee table myself. In short, here's what I did. I purchased an Acacia wood slab on eBay. Nakashima routinely used Black Walnut for his projects — but Acacia is actually heavier/stronger than Black Walnut and, from what I've seen, it's more economical. It also has a beautiful grain. I sanded the table down with a random orbit sander in the direction of the grain. (For this particular project, I used a RIDGID 5 In. Random Orbit Sander. It's a tool that's generally well reviewed and I highly recommend it.) I started sanding the wood with 40-grit sandpaper, and worked myself up to 60, 80, 120, 150, and 220.

Steen posted this lovely pic of her nighttime view, saying, "I don't have too many pictures of our view but the house we're renting right now backs up to a conservation area. It's quite lovely, despite the influx of mosquitoes due to the wetlands. It's nice to hear the frogs and crickets at night or watch the fireflies play out in the thick foliage. Sandhill cranes and other assorted birds fly around and there's even a big family of rabbits in the drier part of the conservation area."

Su Casa: A Coveted Closet Renovation

What girl doesn't long for a big walk-in closet? Well, Haze decided to make that longing a reality when she and her husband remodeled the child's room, located directly off of their master bedroom, and turned it into a walk-in closet. This is definitely much more than a small change, and I admire Haze's hard work and impressive results!

She writes,

I don't have the "before" photos but you'll have to trust me when I tell you that it was a mess. There was a vintage 1970s drop ceiling, paneling, and a cheap-o brass light fixture hanging from the ceiling. Sometime, before my husband and I moved in together, he had decided to "redo" the room on his own and started ripping the paneling off of the walls. The original plaster underneath was all but completely destroyed and it was down to the lathe in many places. We also needed to replace and rerun the the vintage 1930s wires to the outlets in the room.

Su Casa: This Garden Is Coming Up Roses

Even though Good to Grow month is over, I couldn't let a technicality like that prevent me from sharing some photos of SweetpeasMom's lovely flower garden.

She writes,

This is a little area on my back deck. SweetPea couldn't stay out of the picture. On the left on the deck are two miniature rose plants and then some white flowers I don't remember the name of. On the right side on the deck is a pot with tulips (which didn't bloom this year... so far... that's wishful thinking for you!) and it also has strawberries growing in it. . . . And I don't know the names for any of the flowers along the top, I got them all because they were different shades of purple and I wanted color out there. We had a stormy night a few nights ago, and it kind of beat them all up. I don't know if they'll come back, but I'll keep them there until I'm sure they're dead. (Again, wishful thinking!!) I didn't get a picture of it, but I planted some jasmine this year off of the deck and I'm hoping it will grow up through the lattice.

Su Casa: Inspired Projects

Almost a year ago, I posted a Midday Muse post challenging readers to incorporate a floral motif into their homes. Well, one awesome reader took up the challenge by creating some gorgeous floral art. But she didn't stop there!

She also created "Pearls Optional" decorative wall decor, hand-painted acrylic on a vinyl body form.

Not content to stop there, she also made a table using the same motif.
Haze writes

The wrought iron base is a reclaimed tea cart (circa 1940-something) that had seen much better days. This side table will be adding service on our patio that is due to be completed very soon now that the weather is starting to warm.

Recently, Rubiesymusica wrote about the transformation of her home's outdoor space with the coming of Spring. She wrote, "Usually everything is in full bloom by Easter, but the lack of rain has pushed it back by two or three weeks. The lilies are starting to bloom, but the big pink and purple flowers that line the siding of the house are already gone!"

I wanted to keep my son's nursery modern and not too babyish or themed, so he could easily grow into it. I found the Dwell Studio Alphabet crib sheets and adored the blue and brown color combination, so I opted to incorporate the colors into the decor (they were also the colors of my shower and the birth announcements, so it's been the "theme" of my experience so far). However, I also wanted to mix in some brighter colors, so I chose orange as the main accent color (I'm also adding a bit of lime green). You can see the orange stretched Avalisa wall art and the Wise Old Owl Mobile. Silver and metal accents are also present around the room, particularly in the contemporary light fixture and wall letters and numbers from Anthropologie. To keep the room from being too dark, I added a white bookcase, white shelves, a white cat nightlight, and a white end table/storage unit. I also put a lambskin rug in front of the crib. I made the window valance from the crib bumper, which would otherwise go unused. The glider is the Monte Luca. Some of the pictures here were taken before he came home from the hospital, and others were taken more recently, so the items in the pictures differ a bit here and there.
