Nice and New: John Robshaw Christmas Stocking

Not to be a brat or anything, but my family has been using the same gigantic Christmas stockings for more than 20 years, always filled to the brim with lots of goodies. So, at 12" x 21", the John Robshaw Block Printed Holly Stockings ($70 each) won't do for me, but they're certainly stylish enough to hang on the mantel simply as décor in my home. Available with a mistletoe, candy cane, or peppermint pattern, they're quite festive and would also make a wonderful gift for anyone you know who's building up their collection of holiday décor. You can count on Kate Spade to infuse full-on girliness into her holiday décor. Spade's candy-colored Holly Heights Tidbit Plates ($50) are good enough to eat! The set of two green/yellow and two red/pink plates has ample festivity for holiday entertaining, but the central starry snowflake pattern is subtle enough that you can pull off the plates all year long. I adore the little dove border and repeated diamond pattern. I think they'd make great jewelry catch-alls for your bureau or coasters even!

The West Coast design magazine's website has lots to offer, including daily finds, archives, video, event recaps and photographs, and the currently monthly issue in digital format. Nice and New: Pottery Barn Leah Desk

A friend of mine has the Neiman Marcus Mirrored Vanity ($899) and I love its flip-up center storage compartment, but I've been feeling lately that mirrored furniture is heading for the "out" bin. So, I was delighted to come across the Leah Desk ($469) in champagne at Pottery Barn. The desk also has a center section that lifts to reveal a beveled mirror and a faux drawer front that folds down to store accessories. Whether you're using the desk to do work, surf the web, or get all gussied up, it has a has a power strip that provides a central place to plug in your Macbook or your straightener. Aside from the technical features, I'm loving its glam champagne turned-wood legs and unexpected red painted interior finish. What do you think?

You may not enjoy the scent of cow manure or the sound of a rooster's crow at the break of dawn, but you can still bring a little farm life into your home without counting Babe as one of your dependents. Velocity has introduced Simrin Farmyard Placemats ($36) into its collection of fashionable table linens, and I think they're just the thing to give us all a taste of the old days, short of rearing animals ourselves. The placemats are made from 100 percent cotton, and can be easily machine washed and dried. But that shouldn't prevent you from line-drying them out in the pasture, if you so please.

You've no doubt seen it in a trendy design store, a hotel lobby, or a wealthy friend's living room. The Swan Chair, designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, is one of the design world's most famous chairs, thanks to its welcoming and comfortable curves and lack of straight lines. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Fritz Hansen, the original manufacturer, released 1,958 limited-edition Swan Chairs on Saturday, each in swan-white, semianiline leather with a pearl-white base, each with a sterling silver pendant around its base, engraved with a unique number. I've always loved the feminine shape of French settee sofas, but they rarely look comfortable. So, I was delighted to come across the Home Decorators Tamara Sofa ($1049), which features a plush white cushion seat and two back pillows, in addition to stylish curves. While the white upholstery may frighten some of you, it can always be reupholstered in a darker fabric, tossed with a throw, or even printed to make it more stain-concealing. It's hard not to love DwellStudio, especially considering all of designer Christiane Lemieux's talent and design expertise. I've long been a fan of the textile company's bedding designs, but unfortunately I'm not in the market for new bed linens. So, I'm delighted to see that DwellStudio has made its foray into la salle de bain. The DwellStudio Petal Plus Bath Mat ($67) is good, clean fun. Its pared-down "petals" are in essence colorful, iconic, First Aid symbols, which couldn't be more appropriate for the bathroom. The 100 percent cotton mat is also super plush and double-sided, making it a cinch to throw in the washing machine. You like?

Nice and New: Bubble Lamp Shade

In 1947, George Nelson decided to create his own collection of lamps, when the silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp he coveted was out of reach financially. The resulting collection, known as the "bubble lamps," became an iconic one, still used prolifically by interior designers today (in fact, Vern Yip is using them in his reno of a community center). The lamps, made by coating a steel-wire skeleton with a plastic coating, were first produced by the Howard Miller Company in 1950. The collection includes a range of pendants in various shapes and sizes, as well as several sconces. Unfortunately, the most demanded type of shade — a table lamp shade — was never produced by Nelson. Thankfully, though, Modernica, the official manufacturer and distributor of the collection for the last 12 years, has recently released a table and floor lamp shade based on Nelson's original designs. The Bubble Lamp Shade ($225 and up) is available in three sizes, and will fit most traditional bases. At long last!

I just came across the Lisa Stickley Custard Cream Tablecloth ($287 and up) and Duck Plates Tablecloth ($287 and up) at Rose & Radish, and I'm completely smitten. Stickley has incorporated a trompe-l'œil effect onto her printed textiles, giving the illusion that her tablecloths are topped with traditional British tea plates. The Custard Cream Tablecloth is printed with floral china patterns with painted rims, and the Duck Plates Tablecloth is based on her own grandfather's duck-themed tea service. I love this twist on vintage British style, and think it's the perfect fit for a tea party among modern girls.

We discussed last week how Brocade Home is back, but with little fanfare and no new Fall collections to show for all the time it spent on its grand vacance this Summer. But, I did notice something nice, new, and appropriate for Fall in the shop. The oversized Brocade Home Brushed Metal Vases ($129) in high-gloss bronze have a warmth that faces off with the rapidly decreasing temperatures these days. At 22 to 30 inches high, they're also statement pieces that will demand attention whether or not you fill them with fresh flowers. If bronze isn't for you, though, they're also available in silver. If you're eager to throw some wallpaper up in your home but you're worried about whether or not you'll want to keep it there on a long-term basis, you should consider using Tempaper. Nice and New: Eden & Eden Launches E-Commerce Site

One of my favorite local design shops here in San Francisco, Eden & Eden, which is run by brother and sister design-philes (Rachel and Chas Eden) who hail from Britain, just launched an e-commerce store on their website, and I couldn't be more excited . . . for you! Of course, I stop by the shop all the time, so I can make my purchases locally. But for those of you outside of the Bay Area, you now have access to all of Eden & Eden's beautiful, quirky, and decidedly Brit treasures from your very own computer. The site is divided into home, jewelry, apparel, and handbag categories, but of course, you know where I'll be shopping. I've been drooling over this green Blah Blah Cushion ($95) for some time now, and seeing it looking so smart on screen may just have pushed me over the edge. Go on over and check out the shop!

Nice and New: West Elm Chunky Plaited Wool Rug

I've long been a fan of the West Elm Cable Rug, due to its plushness, muted gray or ivory color, and its modern look. But, I've heard that the shag rug has a terrible shedding problem, and I worry that it'll go out of style fast. So, I'm delighted with the new West Elm Chunky Plaited Wool Rug ($119-599), which looks equally soft, is offered in the same muted gray or ivory, and is notably modern. It's not exactly a timeless piece, but at least it's not a "trend item" like shag rugs these days. You usually see plaits on a J. Crew sweater, so I find it fun and fresh to see them on the floor. T magazine's Design Fall 2008 issue is now online! Among other things, the issue takes a look at provocative new design trends, profiles British editor turned designer Ilse Crawford, tours the design scene in Philly, visits Mario Bellini's Milan palazzo, looks at some inventive coat trees and umbrella stands, and sneaks a peek at a monochromatic loft and an Upstate New York steel-framed guest house. The cover, shown here, which features a chest of drawers that slide in opposite directions, is an allusion to the different directions design is taking today.

Artist and designer Amy Butler, whom many of you know for her textiles, has decided to delve into the world of ceramics, partnering with Mikasa to introduce Vintage Botanica, a unique china pattern in her signature style. Vintage Botanica is a clean-lined collection with curved silhouettes and fresh, colorful florals and in some cases, a stylish peacock. The dinnerware certainly has that Midwest Modern vibe with vintage and organic elements, and is versatile enough for casual or formal dining, depending on how you style your table setting. You might have seen the Design House Stockholm Carrie Shopping Basket when I featured it in my Not Your Grandma's Lace Trend Alert, or even snuck a peek of it used as a magazine holder in my very own house. I must admit, I shelled out $44 for the basket from Zinc Details — kind of a lot for my shelter mag storage, but I couldn't resist! When I caught it selling for $37 at Unica Home, I felt a little cheated. Now that I've seen it selling at the Container Store for $29.99 (what a steal!), I really just feel as dumb as a rock. But, perhaps this means I can snatch one up to use as an actual shopping basket. : )

Aphrodite had the mythological ability make any man fall in love with her, but I think she works her ways with the ladies, too. The Modern Dose Aphrodite Shelf ($145) certainly has my heart all aflutter, giving the neoclassical a modern edge with acrylic in the shape of an ancient Grecian bust. American artist and designer Tony Duquette has been known since the '40s for his exuberant signature style, designing costumes for Camelot and various Fred Astaire musicals as well as interiors of the homes of the rich and famous. But until now, his home designs and furniture pieces were only available to those who commissioned them before his death in 1999. Furniture company Baker has now brought Duquette's work to the masses (kind of) by releasing a 19-piece collection of reproductions of his designs, which are available to purchase from Baker dealers by all who can afford to. The furniture, lighting, and accessory pieces aren't exactly penny candy, though. The Palmer Chair shown here will cost you $3,850, and the Paris Snowflake Screen is $22,848. So, it looks like I won't be taking any Duquette home with me until I win the lottery. Until that day, I'll just hope that West Elm or Target can make a more affordable knock-off.

Nice and New: Ferm Living Collection No. 3

Ferm Living has just launched Collection No. 3, a new line of wallpapers, some new wall stickers, tea towel designs in organic cotton, and several pillows in both cotton/linen and silk. This collection seems to go in a very different direction from its predecessors, although some wallpapers from the first two collections have been grandfathered into the third (Bindweed, Feather, and Berry Black). The collection introduces some new colorways, and seems to move away from the more literal nature interpretations present in the former two collections. I'm particularly loving the Fashion wallpaper (left); it's just fun and a bit retro . . . or maybe I just have fashion on my mind this week. In with the new, out with the old. As Ferm heralds in its new collection, it's said goodbye to Collection No. 1, and is offering all remaining in-stock Collection No. 1 wallpapers for $30. Yippee! The supply is limited though, so get it fast!

I love all things Martha. I love her magazine, her old magazine (RIP, Blueprint), her mind-boggling multitasking abilities, her droll conversational style, and, yes, those who model themselves as the antithesis of Martha (such as Not Martha). So, imagine my delight when I found out that there was going to be a new Martha Stewart show on the telly. However, this is Martha with a twist. Premiering next Tuesday on the Fine Living Network, Whatever, Martha features Stewart's daughter, Alexis, and friend Jennifer Koppelman Hutt poking gentle fun at the domestic diva.

For those of you who decided to splurge on the Peacock Chair, I have found the perfect lamp shade to go with it! And for those who restrained themselves, I've got a more affordable ostentatious bird for you. The Anthropologie Plumage Shade ($108) is embroidered in silk with peacocks strutting about a navy cotton background. Blissliving Home has released a handful of new Fall bedding sets, and I am particularly enthralled by the Amelie Duvet Set ($225). Not only does it share the name of a quirky French film we all know and love, but also that of one of my top two favorite wine bars in San Francisco. And, if that weren't enough to get me into bed (har har), it has a perfect balance of femininity and modernity. Its large print tree graphic (much like the Marimekko Himmeli Set) gives it a contemporary earthy look. Its ombré effect keeps it trendy. And, its misty purples and pinks add femme appeal. I could do without the sheen, though. What do you think?

I've always loved the look of an antique trunk used as a coffee table, and the fact that they can double as storage for your odds and ends. But, when you're entertaining and your coffee table is spotted with wine glasses and hors d'oeuvre trays, it's a hassle to have to sacrifice your tabletop space if you want access to anything that lies in the storage trunk. So, when I came across the Taka Trunk ($499) at Crate and Barrel, I was delighted to learn that I could have it both ways. The refashioned steamer trunk, made of sustainable plantation-grown shesham wood, is equipped with two generous storage areas, a secret central compartment, removable dividers to store wine or CDs, and a small front drawer to hold your remotes and other small clutter. And, particularly winning, its lid support arms fold out, so you can have tabletop space and still have access to your collection of board games or "bar" inside. I also just adore its nubby round feet and handsome iron hardware. It's this sort of piece that makes me favor traditionalism on occasion, and nearly convinces me to stop loving more modern pieces like the Louis Ghost chair. Just nearly.

But, when you're talking about Angela Adams, the letters connote all kinds of goodness. This time, it's pillows. Angela has impressed me with a new collection of throw pillows ($85) in a variety of bold graphic patterns and shapes. If her attention-grabbing rugs were too audacious for you, or just too expensive, maybe now is the time to incorporate some AA into your life. In the past, I've given you the lowdown on how to dust and where to dust . . . but what to dust with? Well, genuine ostrich down feather dusters are a-ok, but aside from that you should opt for microfiber towels. Wait. Scratch that. How about a microfiber bunny? That's right, the Fred and Friends Dust Bunny ($14.99) is made from "high-tech, dust-gathering, machine-washable, high-pile microfiber, right down to the fluffy chenille tail." And, you can wear it like a hand puppet! How can you argue with that? I mean . . . who ever said dusting couldn't be adorable?

One thing that's awesome about Ikea sofas is that nearly all of them have covers that are removable and washable. This makes them great for living with kids or very messy people. Even if you're neat as a pin and child-free, though, the novelty of switching out the look of your living room for less than $250 is certainly a treat. If you have an Ektorp sofa or are considering acquiring one, then take a look at the cool new Ikea Klintbo Blue Cover ($249). Too busy you say? I disagree; this could look amazing in a funky living room like Rachel Comey's, which was recently featured in Domino.

Amy Butler has introduced a new home décor fabric collection for Rowan, called August Fields. The collection features four diverse color stories inspired by gardens and wild fields in "high season." Their natural prints and modern textures are easy to mix and match . . . which is good because you'll want to get your hands on every one of them. The suzani trend has been going on for probably a year now, and somehow I've yet to tire of it. VivaTerra has just introduced a Suzani Bench ($395-895) that is truly stunning and also eco-friendly. Made from 100 percent organic cotton and sustainable sheesham wood, and colored with eco-friendly dyes, it's one addition to your home that won't incite remorse. Available in two sizes, the elegant embroidered benches can serve as seating or a coffee table, used with a tray. At this point, I've seen the suzani trend played out in all sorts of products, often mimicking the textile's pattern rather than the embroidery itself, so it's refreshing to see such well-executed needlework.

I've shown you some rugs by Sweden-based design/art studio Henzel before, and you were pretty split over whether you loved them or hated them. Several of you expressed that although they would make a great focal point in a room, it might be hard to integrate them. Well, Calle Henzel has created a collection with that same bold presence in a smaller dose, which just might be the next best thing: the Henzel Art Pillows (inquire for price). The luxe contemporary pillow collection is the antithesis of run-of-the-mill, featuring a mix of materials, patterns, and printing techniques. No, they're not exactly my style, but I do find them cool and arty looking; perhaps more suited to a mod bachelor pad. What do you think?

Mrs. Meyer's has just released a new collection of basil-scented aromatherapeutic household cleaners, including shower cleaner, window spray, automatic dishwashing liquid, scent diffusers, bar soap, and toilet bowl cleaner. Prices range from $4.99 to $34.99. What could be sweeter than having a house that smells as fresh as your garden? Mrs. Meyer's is known for its environmentally friendly cleaning products, which gives them bonus points in my book. I'm a big basil fan so these products are right up my alley; how about you?

It's about that time again. Ikea's new 2009 catalog arrived in my mailbox last week and I spent a good 40 minutes gawking at all of the beautifully styled and photographed rooms, and now it's available for you to flip through online.
The big-box retailer may sell mostly flat-pack, assembly-required MDF furniture that's not the sturdiest I've ever owned, and they may charge an arm and a leg for shipping, but I will give it to Ikea for consistently emerging with eye-catching designs and photography styled to the nines. I'm at a point where I'm honestly trying only to bring home timeless, durable furniture that I can pass on to my kids one day, but when it comes to some accents, and textiles especially, Ikea never fails to win me over —
without breaking the bank. If I'd never seen their products in person, they could have fooled me: their new inventory is quite photogenic, appearing luxe, vivid, and perhaps most importantly, inspiring, on all 300-some pages.

I'm always on the lookout for interesting lighting, and while I do go gaga for hip, modern pieces, my traditional upbringing has left me with a soft spot for antiques and reproductions likely to be coveted by mother. The Wisteria Call to Dinner Chandelier ($349) is no exception. Its reproduction old hotel silverware and hemispheric iron frame give it the look of an antique, without the price. And, it has a quirky, creative quality that's characteristic of my wacky family. In fact, now that I think of it, my grandmother used to hang antique silverware on ribbons from the rafters in her kitchen — maybe that's why I'm fond of this piece.

Formal gardens have gone out of vogue since Marie Antoinette's time, and most of us can't afford the upkeep anyhow. But, we can still appreciate their beauty. And, now we can do so in our very own homes, with the Garden Plan Tray ($135) from the New York Botanical Garden Shop. The beautiful black lacquer and silver plate tray features a garden plan from Détail des Nouveaux Jardins à la mode, by Georges-Louis Le Rouge, a book published in Paris in 1776. Ok, so I thought I was ready to admit that birds were for the, well, birds. But darn it, this new Vintage Bird Duvet Cover and Shams ($19 to $159) has me singing a different tune. I love the simple black line drawing-like print of the birds and trees on the creamy 230-thread count combed cotton fabric. The pattern is available in shams, duvet cover, and comforter, which comes in a choice of down or down-alternative batting. I am definitely tempted to put these on my wedding registry. There's only one thing holding me back: When the dog hops on the bed, I guarantee she'll leave her gray/black/brown fur on this in plain sight. Ah, a conundrum!

I've got to hand it to Jonathan Adler for bringing needlepoint back. The technique is no longer reserved for wasp-y belts or occupational therapy, but is now giving living rooms an ironic punch of whimsy and color. The Jonathan Adler Harlequin Pillow ($175) has a bright, graphic pattern based on a harlequin's traditional costume that will instantly liven up your living room sofa or chair. I'm too
straightedge to find his Drugs Pillow funny, but I'm all for harlequin's granny-chic aesthetic and oceanic-blue color palette. What do you think? I bet Adler's future husband likes it . . .

Nice and New: West Elm Art Inserts

Don't get me wrong. I'm not one to purchase mass-produced artwork (unless it's a Saul Bass poster), and I've never been impressed with it — until now: The new West Elm Art Inserts ($14, $19) are quite good looking. West Elm is pushing customers to purchase all of their art inserts, which were made to fit their gallery frames, by suggesting they "create their own gallery show." Good sales ploy. The designs include butterflies, multicolored stripes, a crown, an urn, antique telephones, some graphic prints, and the word "Brooklyn." Aside from the Brooklyn print (cough. lame!), I'm liking what I see. However, l have my doubts that they'd stand up as well on their own. What do you think? As much as I'd like to give West Elm a pat on the back, I still prefer original, unique artwork for my own home.

Designer Joel Dewberry, whose eclectic modern textiles bring retro flair to the home, has a new collection of fabrics out. This collection is described by Joel as achieving the following:

"Ginseng captures the delicate beauty of the orchid while complementing it with a variety of sophisticated and elegant floral prints. With a subtle Asian influence, the Ginseng collection delivers a clean and memorable palette of designs and color that promise to bring beauty to your home."

The fabrics in the collection are making me anxious to finish my birds project and head down to my local sewing store to snap up a few of the new designs. All of the fabrics are available in cotton sateen in home-decorating weight, so they'd be perfect for placemats, curtains, or any other fabric-related home reno project. Do you like them, too?

Nice and New: Klaus Rosburg Cuckoo Clock

I'm not quite sure if I'm sick of the cuckoo clock trend or not, but I must admit I like the Klaus Rosburg Cuckoo Clock ($95). While there's been a proliferation of die-cut mirrors, something about the mirrored silhouette shape of a cuckoo clock against this exposed brick wall caught my eye. The ornate, three-dimensional design of traditional cuckoo clocks gives them a lively, kitschy feel, but seeing one in silhouette form made me appreciate them in a whole new way. This clock may not have a (sometimes obnoxious) bird popping out of its façade on the hour, but its interesting curves and
shapes are enough to make me chirp. What do you think? Are you a fan?

Nice and New: Crate & Barrel Bing Table Lamp

Maybe I'm still seeing rouge, but I've really been seduced by the new Crate and Barrel Bing Table Lamp ($59). Its petite size and bubble shape of its hand-blown red glass base is certainly charming, but what I really love is how its over-sized fabric shade matches the base in color. It's rare to see matching shades and bases, and while it could look a bit overwhelming, in this case I think it's refreshingly delightful. To be bold, you could put it in an all white kitchen, or it would be subtle in a room with lots of patterns and texture in similar hues. What you think? Do you love it?

Nice and New: Picnic Trunk with Table

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the Summer weather is picnic-ing with friends and good grub. But, sometimes picnics can be so orchestrated — "Meet at the north west corner of the park. Bring X,Y, and Z drinks. Oh! And don't forget your frisbee. I don't have a blanket, do you? Should we invite so and so?" — that it gets me down. I always envision the perfect picnic in my mind, and coordinating all the ideal details complicates things and stresses me out. So, it's crucial to have a picnic basket ready to go, so I can have a hassle-free picnic on the fly. A worthy heir, Lou Lou Ghost incorporates the features of its big sister, with a Louis XVI silhouette that is resolutely modern and features a polycarbonate body, a resistance to scratches, and perfect ergonomics. All you design-fiend parents out there can turn your kids on to good design from an early age with the Lou Lou. Available in a variety of candy-colored transparent pastel colors (fluorescent orange and green, sugar pink, blue, sky blue, purple, lilac, and pale green) and three opaque colors (red, white, black), you're bound to find one that suits your little darling. And for those of you without kids' rooms to furnish, I honestly think it'd be pretty cute used to stack books beside your favorite reading chair. For those of you wondering how to decorate a studio, or just living in a small space, I've always emphasized that dual-purpose furniture is key. A pull-out sofa will accommodate overnight guests and serve as seating during the day. At 66" wide, the West Elm Convertible Sofa ($799) is a great size for a studio. It will fit two people comfortably in front of a coffee table (or storage ottomans!) and unfolds to be used as a bed when needed. It's only available in two colors — light camel or pumice —. But, I think the colors are pretty versatile, especially if you personalize the sofa with your own accent pillows and a throw.

Earlier today, I had the good fortune to peruse some of the CB2 items that will be available at San Francisco's new CB2 store, which is opening in Union Square on July 31. San Francisco will be the fourth US city to host a CB2 store, and the first west of Chicago. The new store will feature all of the great furniture and home accessories you find in CB2's catalog in an easily navigable, relaxed 8,000-square-foot retail space. Also tempting is that many of the new store's furniture items are scaled down to work in small urban apartment spaces (perfect for SF studio dwellers).

Nice and New: Point à la Ligne Macaroon Pyramid Candle

Ages ago I wrote a Trend Alert on Yummy Candles, which began with a Point à la Ligne Macaroon Candle Set that was tragically out of stock at Rose and Radish. Like Sofia Coppola, I love all things macaroon: the colors, the taste, the packaging, the hard-to-come-by quality, and their fancy French origins. And, obviously it's in my nature to treasure home décor. So when a macaroon comes my way that will light up my home with girl-y scrumptiousness, how can I resist? Rose and Radish has restocked and is now selling this amazing Point à la Ligne Macaroon Pyramid Candle ($79) that stands nearly a foot tall, and has come all the way to San Francisco from Paris. I've died and gone to confection heaven.

Nice and New: Saul Bass Posters at MoMA Store

I always struggle when faced with filling out personal questionnaires (they're lame), except when it comes to the "who I'd like to meet" field. My response to this question is always Saul Bass, undisputedly one of the greatest graphic designers of the mid-20th century. Bass's vision has given a face to long-standing brands like Minolta, AT&T, and United Airlines, and he was also a master of film title sequence and poster design, collaborating with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and Martin Scorsese. Bass died in '96 of lymphoma, so the long-shot chance of ever meeting him will sadly never come. But, I delight in knowing I can still enjoy his work, as the MoMA Store now sells reproductions of his posters, such as Psycho ($12) and Vertigo ($12).
