Anna Spiro created this Christmas window display for her shop, Black & Spiro, in Brisbane, Australia. The display has a blue, white, and pink color palette and uses old Delftware to decorate the tree, as well as silver bowls and pink roses. I think it's a very festive, imaginative design for a window display, but I can't say I'd recreate it in my own home. What do you think?

At last night's Moth Ball, an annual benefit for The Moth, a New York-based not-for-profit storytelling organization, Indian-British novelist and essayist Salman Rushdie was presented with a Jonathan Adler-designed Moth Award. Peculiarly, you can purchase the very same statuette, Peace Hand ($225), in Adler's stores or online. I'm all for harmony, but I think it's a bit taboo that anyone with the dough can take home their own Peace Hand statuette. Poor Rushdie.Source

Open House: Country Style Décor

If you watch Samantha Who?, you may have noticed that Regina Newly, Samantha's mother, is all about the country style décor. Blue gingham? Check! (Har har.) Handmade quilt? Check! Roosters? Check! Check! Check! I've never been one for décor themes, regardless of the inspiration behind it. And, I am a little turned off by homes with a country style that are not actually in the country. I think if you live on a farm, or in a rural area at least, it's acceptable. I can't say I'll be getting the look of Mrs. Newly's home in my own, unless maybe we're talking about a set of farmyard place mats. Samantha's pad, on the other hand, I'd willingly move right into. Enough about me, I want to know what you all think of this countryside style. Do you like it? Do you have any pastoral accessories in your home? Do you like theme decorating in general? This Terra Cotta Lion ($449.99) is an interpretation of a 17th century Indonesian design, and can be used both inside and out. It definitely would create an unexpected element in a room, but I can't imagine looking at this guy when I first open my eyes in the morning, can you?

While I do applaud the Wallflower Wallrack (inquire for price) for doing without the use of screws, dowels, or tools (it stays stable thanks to four elastic buffers and a steel leg), its stainless steel leg is a space hog. And, at seven in the morning, when you're half-awake entering the bathroom to wash your face, the chance of tripping on that protruding leg is a real possibility. But . . . at least it looks cool.

I've been inspired by a lot of the Apartment Therapy Fall Colors 2008 Contest entries, and it seems like my favorites involve homes with pets in the photos. Of course, this is a reflection of my pet love in general. However, I really do believe that a cute pup or kitty in a photo makes an appealing home look 10 times better. This Palin Change Pillow by artist Lauren Frances Adams is part of the Pro/Con Political Craft exhibition at Rebus Works gallery in Raleigh, NC.According to her artist statement:

Utilizing visual humor, Adams recalls typical domestic situations to explore political vacillations and permeability of red-versus-blue mentality. Adams is particularly interested in presenting situations that examine American consumerism, nationalist military defense, and political identity.

Italian architect Gianluca Soldi, who is deeply involved with environmental issues, designed the Ovetto Bin ($255) to make recycling easier and more organized, offering three segregated divisions for your different types of recycling. A friend of mine has been advocating just this sort of thing for a while now, a functional recycling bin that makes recycling not a chore but a thoughtless routine. While I'm certainly pleased with the advent of an alternative to those useless blue office bins, I'm not keen on Ovetto's looks. I'm sure it jives with the design elite, but I'd like to call for something that blends in with the rest of our kitchens, not one that looks like a dinosaur egg/Saarinen table fusion. I want to see something so ordinary that its aesthetics are almost an afterthought, that aims to actually get people recycling rather than win design awards in Milano.

I've been into the skull trend for a year now, but ever since I saw this AT:NY house tour, my love for three-dimensional skulls was solidified. I'm not a fan of Hot Topic-esque skull motifs or patterns, but realistic shapes, like Dan Akroyd's Crystal Head vodka or this shimmery Z Gallerie Metallic Skull ($24.95) have me head over heels.

French designer Bertrand Planes's limited-edition Life Clock (inquire for price) isn't your average wall clock, although it may appear to be at first glance. Slowed down 61320 times, its mechanism is actually built so that one full rotation mimics the average human lifespan, and each minute represents a year. I'm certainly impressed the Planes took the time (hah) to create this, but at the same time it might be too disturbing to hang in my house. Much like the Chrono Shredder, the Life Clock does an eerie and too-accurate job of reminding us of the passing of time. Source

Whenever there's a scene in Mad Men involving the Drapers' bedroom, my eyes are always drawn to their tufted velvet headboard. Its color, texture, and tufting are over-the-top feminine, and reflect nothing of Don's removed masculinity. If you follow Gossip Girl, you may have noticed that the Humphreys, the token "pauvre" family, live in a killer converted Brooklyn loft that by the standards of most (perhaps not Park Avenue ladies who lunch) would be considered a Coveted Crib. Though it may not come complete with a doorman and an elevator (to get stuck in!), it's a massive space with gorgeous colored window panes, loads of rad midcentury furniture and artwork (thanks to Rufus's keen gallerist eye), and a garage door wall! How funky is that? I'd take it over Madison Avenue any day. Maybe you'd prefer life on the Upper East Side though — to each his own.

Known for its colorful, busy, hand-painted designs, MacKenzie-Childs isn't what I would call my personal style. However, I can endure it in small measure, such as one of the company's small ceramic plates. But I find the Felicitous Fish Chair ($1,850) — which is upholstered in striped silk, embellished with a grosgrain ribbon button and copper leaf, stain, and hand-painted accents, and uses two polka-dot fish as its backrest — a little over the top. What do you think?
