Found It! Preston Lee's Bedroom Wallpaper

If you follow Top Design, I'm sure you have lots to say about the contestants' designs . . . and you might have even been inspired every now and then. In the finale, the "House Challenge," each room had its own appeal, but I couldn't help but love the wallpaper in Preston's polished, though slightly impersonal, bedroom. Personally, I love it!

DIY: Shutter Earrings Display

If you liked my transformation of a shutter, then check out this DIY, where I show you how to make an earrings display out of some low-cost materials. This is a fun and fast DIY that will instantly transform an earring collection.

What You'll Need

One shutter (check out an architectural salvage store or a junkyard for cheap shutters)
Wallpaper samples, or heavy paper
Mod Podge or wallpaper paste
Scissors or a razor blade
Paintbrush
Flat edge tool, such as a credit card
Three screws: two short screws for the back of your shutter, and one longer screw for the wall
Screwdriver or power drill
Picture hanging wire

The appeal of changing your desktop wallpaper is obvious — it's free, it's easy, and you get a mental refresher every time you look at your computer screen, which is something most of us have to do all day. Sometimes we stick to ones we like for a long time, and sometimes you're in the mood to switch it up, as I am now. Usually I go for a fun design, but today? I am all Costanza.

Sure, you can get any of the Seinfeld characters for your desktop, but do you need anyone besides George Costanza, he of the Greatest Answering Machine Message Ever? I think not.

Nice and New: Ferm Living Collection No. 3

Ferm Living has just launched Collection No. 3, a new line of wallpapers, some new wall stickers, tea towel designs in organic cotton, and several pillows in both cotton/linen and silk. This collection seems to go in a very different direction from its predecessors, although some wallpapers from the first two collections have been grandfathered into the third (Bindweed, Feather, and Berry Black). The collection introduces some new colorways, and seems to move away from the more literal nature interpretations present in the former two collections. I'm particularly loving the Fashion wallpaper (left); it's just fun and a bit retro . . . or maybe I just have fashion on my mind this week. In with the new, out with the old. As Ferm heralds in its new collection, it's said goodbye to Collection No. 1, and is offering all remaining in-stock Collection No. 1 wallpapers for $30. Yippee! The supply is limited though, so get it fast!

Geek Out: What's Your Desktop Wallpaper?

I love seeing the offices of design mavens because they inevitably have some fabulous desktop wallpaper on the screen for the photo op, always something that complements the rest of the design of the office.

Case in point: Making it Lovely's Nicole shared her office recently, and my eye gravitated immediately to her Mac and the art on her desktop, the colors of which coordinate with the dominant pinks and reds of her office space.

I too enjoy a pretty, serene wallpaper as the setting for the madness that takes place on top of it; right now I can't seem to shake the Kaiku Marimekko pattern. Other times, I want to see a family pic stretched across my monitor, and sometimes I crave a simple, solid color to calm me. And I am not opposed to a really high-res photo of a flower (shoot, I am a girl).

But I'm curious about everyone else, since I think your computer's desktop wallpaper says a lot about you; What's yours?

Before and After: A Fresh Secretary Desk

Christiana Coop of Ferm Living recently shared a DIY project of hers on her blog Clever Spaces, finding yet another use for Ferm's gorgeous wallpaper. She decided to update a Target Secretary Desk ($144.99) by priming and painting it white, and wallpapering the interior with the Ferm Wild Flower (Green) Wallpaper ($115). By measuring the inside sections of the desk first, and then using an adhesive spray to keep them down, the project was pretty breezy. And, to keep the paper intact as the desk is used, Coop sprayed it with a protective coating. To see the impressive results,

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Overlapping Leaves Wallpaper

I recently introduced you to Graham & Brown's Paste the Wall wallpaper, which applies easily by pasting the wall not the paper, and peels off in full sheets. I was certainly won over by the retailer's new wallpaper technology, not to mention their vast selection of beautiful patterns and didn't think it could get any better. But it turns out that the Overlapping Leaves Wallpaper ($59.99, reduced from $84) not only pulls out in full sheets, but also has a preapplied adhesive that affixes effortlessly . . . and it's on sale! Unfortunately, the selection is limited to just this one pattern. But, that's not to say I don't love its monochrome leaf pattern.
