The day after my wedding, one of my bridesmaids and I, exhausted from the weekend's events, popped into a matinee of Mamma Mia. While our reviews were mixed (please, please let me never hear Pierce Brosnan sing again), one element of the film got an enthusiastic thumbs up: the gorgeous textiles. I was absolutely inspired by the film's bedding, tablecloths, and pillows.

I'm a fan of this photo in theory — it reminds me of the mix of patterns employed in the interior design of my favorite San Francisco tea house, Lovejoy's. Like this photo, Lovejoy's blends jumbled textile patterns and mismatched china to create an eccentric, fun interior. This funky mix of patterns is perfect for an hour of cucumber sandwiches and Earl Gray.

I hate to be a downer, but I just have to say that there is nothing interesting about this matchy-matchy style of décor to me. I do love toile, florals, and gingham but seeing so much of them all in one space makes me sad. The lithograph prints hanging on the wall look like they could be beautiful, antique treasures, and the armchairs have an elegant, classic shape, but these great qualities are lost in the busyness of the patterns.

Want to integrate some Summer style into your home without going overboard? Then pick up one of these pillows from Dermond Peterson Design.
These pillows' prints are sophisticated, toned-down versions of the cliché Summer motifs that abound, and won't need to be switched out once the leaves turn color.

Cameron Diaz's Oscar de la Renta dress, which she wore at the Women in Film Awards, reminded me of another beautiful lady who's fond of appliqué and reverse appliqué. In fact, this designer marks them as signature techniques in her fashion and home décor lines. I've featured her work a few times in the past, along with her inspiring book.
