Ask Casa: A Color For My Kitchen

Hello, I am having a particularly difficult time deciding which color to paint my kitchen walls. They came in a brown, which I do not like at all. My tastes are contemporary. Most of the walls are white wainscoting. The living room is gray with a bluish tone, and the dining room is a blue green peacock color, and I want something that would go with both. Before and After: From Sterile to Welcoming

Craftster member Sweets4ever reports that she and her husband have been getting their nest on. She writes, "I'm due in just over two weeks and we decided we need to repaint some rooms in our house now . . . We bought our house six years ago. I don't think I have pictures of the original bathroom, but it was awful. It may have been the original bathroom from the build in 1969. Cheesy. We remodeled — new sink, vanity, lighting, tiles, tub and surround. Unfortunately we either ran out of time, money or energy and we never really decorated it. But now we've finally redeemed ourselves!"

Before and After: A Buffet Gets Styled

Talk about changing the look of things! Craftster member Olga reports that this buffet, which is made from cheap materials, was purchased for $15. She writes, "I wanted to do something to help this buffet, and at the same time I needed to get more practice with different or new materials. For a long time I went back and forth on what to do with this monster, and finally, after months of staring at its ugliness I was inspired by an ad in Architectural Digest."

Su Casa: A Spruced Up Bathroom

Su Casa member Tweet Hotpants recently posted some great pictures of her bathroom renovation. She writes, "These are some before and after shots of our downstairs bathroom. When we first moved in, it was painted a boring white, so we decided to spruce it up a little and paint it brown . . . well, we woke up the next morning and hated it!

Cool Idea: Painted Stripes Headboard

I've written about painted headboards before (and even DIY'd my own), so it's really nothing new. But, I am loving how design firm Shelton, Mindel & Associates made the entire wall behind this sleeping space a focal point with bold stripes, and within that created a focal point above the headboard by painting stripes in a slightly lighter shade than the rest. This look is really easy and affordable to achieve in your own home. And, if you don't have a real headboard of your own as this room does, the rectangle of lighter stripes can serve as a headboard alternative. What do you think?

I've been swooning over these Sergio Rossi paint splattered pumps ever since Alicia Keys wore them to the BET awards. They're an artistic confection just waiting for me to sink my toes into them. However, I'm not rich like Alicia and am not willing to spend an extraneous amount of money on such a novelty shoe.

Midday Muse: A Patterned Floor

This gorgeous floor, which was hand painted by Catherine, won the Design*Sponge prize for best use of pattern in a home. I can definitely see why. I know a lot of friends who have concrete floors in their homes, but I've never seen any of them painted with patterns. Now, I'm going to have to bend their ears about this cool idea.

Midday Muse: Painted Ceilings

Think outside of the blanc. Put down your Benjamin Moore Decorator's White, and opt for color on your ceiling instead. You may think you're playing it safe by leaving yours white, but you're actually just ignoring the potential there.By painting your ceiling a pale hue of a cool color, such as green or blue, you will visually lift the ceiling, since those colors recede, instantly making a small room feel larger. Conversely, painting a dark hue of a warm color will visually lower the ceiling, since those colors procede, making a large room feel smaller or any room just feel more intimate. The ceiling of this vast room was painted an oceanic blue, extending and brightening it, giving it almost an aquarium quality. Are your ceilings painted? Have you considered painting them? How about wallpapering them?
