I know a lot of you may be in the same boat as
HipMom, who recently enlisted my help
in her search for a laptop that not only satisfies her work needs, but that is comfortable to carry, and that falls within a strict budget. She writes:
I need help finding a laptop. This wouldn't be my main computer, (I have a desktop PC I use all the time), but I have started writing and I'd like to be able to just jot stuff down whenever I feel like it, so it seems like a laptop would be a good idea.

Although I've said before that
I wouldn't ditch my computer for a slim and watered-down netbook, I can see the appeal. For some folks, toting around a five pound machine conjures up thoughts of neck stiffness and shoulder realignments, while
spending upwards of $1700 for an ultra-light MacBook Air can really break the bank, especially in these volatile economic times. And whether or not
Steve Jobs thinks that netbooks are gaining in popularity, the fact remains that they are!

The elegant ladies of
Lipstick Jungle are Apple lovers — two women have MacBook Airs while one has a MacBook Pro. The most notable thing about their laptops is that they use them at work (and
in the bathroom, yuck).
Gone are the days when everyone had a company-issued desktop computer, and here to stay is the time when work goes with you via your
BlackBerry and laptop.

The "home office" ain't what it used to be. You used to have to use a spare bedroom with some awful looking computer desk and truly boring accessories, but these days, when you can go light and laptop, the "home office" becomes something less obtrusive and easier to pull off. Of course, since you can use a laptop anywhere, TV characters literally do, and sometimes it's admirable, sometimes it's interesting, and sometimes it's just questionable.

You've probably already been back to school for a few weeks now, but it's never too late to update your wardrobe, and this (of course) includes your gadget wardrobe!
What kind of a friend would I be if I let you walk around campus with last year's laptop bag or DS case? Psh.

Last night during her Spring 2009 show, Vivienne Tam unveiled her laptop cum clutch special-edition notebook, which she teamed up with Hewlett-Packard to create. Our Coutorture girls were
on the scene for the entire show, and even caught up with the designer herself to chat about her partnership with HP, her love for technology and how she wanted to bring beauty and color to this notebook. This digital clutch offers a 10-inch screen and will be available this October.

I'm always going on about how
not keeping your laptop in a bag is going to damage it, but there are some people who go in a very odd direction with laptop safekeeping, and well, the results are not exactly appetizing.
Check out what happened when a guy left his
laptop in the oven for safekeeping while out of town, and then — yes, someone turned it on and it melted. Generally, I hear that is what happens in these oven contraptions.
