DIY: Shutter Earrings Display

If you liked my transformation of a shutter, then check out this DIY, where I show you how to make an earrings display out of some low-cost materials. This is a fun and fast DIY that will instantly transform an earring collection.

What You'll Need

One shutter (check out an architectural salvage store or a junkyard for cheap shutters)
Wallpaper samples, or heavy paper
Mod Podge or wallpaper paste
Scissors or a razor blade
Paintbrush
Flat edge tool, such as a credit card
Three screws: two short screws for the back of your shutter, and one longer screw for the wall
Screwdriver or power drill
Picture hanging wire

I found these cool, untreated, wood shutters at Urban Ore, an architectural salvage yard in Berkeley. While I didn't exactly know what I was going to do with them, I knew that I'd think of something, so I dragged a few of them home.

Nice and New: Ferm Living Collection No. 3

Ferm Living has just launched Collection No. 3, a new line of wallpapers, some new wall stickers, tea towel designs in organic cotton, and several pillows in both cotton/linen and silk. This collection seems to go in a very different direction from its predecessors, although some wallpapers from the first two collections have been grandfathered into the third (Bindweed, Feather, and Berry Black). The collection introduces some new colorways, and seems to move away from the more literal nature interpretations present in the former two collections. I'm particularly loving the Fashion wallpaper (left); it's just fun and a bit retro . . . or maybe I just have fashion on my mind this week. In with the new, out with the old. As Ferm heralds in its new collection, it's said goodbye to Collection No. 1, and is offering all remaining in-stock Collection No. 1 wallpapers for $30. Yippee! The supply is limited though, so get it fast!

Before and After: A Fresh Secretary Desk

Christiana Coop of Ferm Living recently shared a DIY project of hers on her blog Clever Spaces, finding yet another use for Ferm's gorgeous wallpaper. She decided to update a Target Secretary Desk ($144.99) by priming and painting it white, and wallpapering the interior with the Ferm Wild Flower (Green) Wallpaper ($115). By measuring the inside sections of the desk first, and then using an adhesive spray to keep them down, the project was pretty breezy. Crave Worthy: Ingo Maurer Birds Birds Birds Chandelier

Ever since I spotted the Ingo Maurer Birds Birds Birds Chandelier ($5,928) in Christiana Coop of Ferm Living's dining room (shown here), I've been preying for one of my own. Made of aluminum wires that can be turned, bent, or stretched, and are attached to goose-feather wings, the chandelier resembles a flock of birds fleeing the coop, taking on a life of its own and allowing for a bit of personalization. I'm a huge fan of the German artist and lighting designer; I love the eccentricity that he brings to his pieces. Of course, there are countless crave worthy chandeliers out there, but Birds Birds Birds is a statement piece that speaks wonders in an uncomplicated interior, such as Coop's.

Casa Quickie: Wallpaper a Nook

One small change you can make that will cost only the cost of a roll of wallpaper (if that) is simply to wallpaper a nook, rather than an entire room or even a whole accent wall in your home. Christiana Coop of Ferm Living shared images on her blog of a San Francisco apartment styled by Eden & Eden's Rachel Eden. Rachel chose to wallpaper one wall in a small nook of the otherwise predominantly white-walled apartment with Ferm Old News Wallpaper ($94) behind an industrial, stainless steel cabinet. The busy paper used throughout the apartment would be overwhelming, to say the least, but the small dose of pattern is intriguing and subtle.

See, Flat Screen TVs Can Be Decor!

In case anyone needs photographic evidence about why I yearn to mount my flat screen on the wall, here it is. Of course, this picture was submitted to Ferm Living's blog to show off the whimsical wall decals in a studio, but all I see is that black Samsung TV.

I especially love how photographer Lauren Hillary uses the TV as a design element — the shiny black of the TV's "frame" complements the black decals against her green wall. You can tell that she also uses it as a monitor by the equally chic ultra thin keyboard and Mighty Mouse. I also appreciate the functional and decorative touches of her cameras. I wonder if she'll come and do my interiors?

Hi! I love Ferm Living! I'm glad you've introduced me to it (too bad I rent... le sigh). I was wondering though, if you knew where the tiny spool-like bedside table is from? Do they also do furniture?

Nice and New: Ferm Living Textiles

Danish company Ferm Living just launched its new bedding line at the Scandinavian design fair, Formland, in Denmark. The bedding will include several of my favorite wallpaper patterns including Feather, Waldots, and Bindweed. Right now it is only available in European sizing, which is a bit small, but the US sizing should be available in early Summer. Ferm also recently launched a nature-inspired pillow collection as well as some lovely tea towels, which should all be available in May. Come Summer, I may just have to redecorate entirely!
