This week, author Curtis Sittenfeld's new book American Wife hits book stores near you. The book is inspired by the life of Laura Bush, and a few weeks ago, when I was about halfway through American Wife, I chatted with Sittenfeld about the controversial aspects of the book, how this epic American tale is a departure from her previous two books, and what's going on with the movie version of Prep.
Buzz: This character, Alice Blackwell, is intriguing and sexy, and generally those terms are considered mutually exclusive from the first lady.

Taking inspiration from my girl Buzz, the time has come to launch our very own virtual book club here on PopUK. Just like the Buzz Book Club, we will read and discuss a book every month.
I've chosen Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh for our first foray this September. It's a timely decision, as a new DVD of the 1981 TV series was released today, and the film version (starring Emma Thompson and The Duchess' Hayley Atwell) hits UK cinema screens on 3 October.
Here's how it will work: each week I'll suggest chapters to complete by the next post (each Monday).
Welcome back, Buzz Book Club readers. We've finally come to the end of Tom Perrotta's The Wishbones and unfortunately the main character, Dave, just might be one of the least appealing protagonists I've come across. But that's how it goes sometimes.

I'm really happy about this movie news: George Clooney and director Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking) may be teaming up for the film adaptation of the Walter Kirn novel Up in the Air. Variety has details:
Clooney will play an unapologetic corporate downsizer whose untethered life is consumed by collecting air miles. .

Soon, author Emily Giffin will find something of hers borrowed for the big screen — her stories. Hilary Swank and her producing partner Molly Smith have bought the rights to Giffin's popular novels Something Borrowed and Something Blue, and they may end up being "starring vehicles" for Swank. We were just talking about these producing partners and another book-to-movie deal that may star Swank: French Women Don't Get Fat.

Word on the street is that the current generation of the Kindle is going to be replaced by a newer, younger, and prettier model.
It sounds like it's going to take a crack at improving upon the things that many (and I personally) dislike about the Kindle: the price, which will go down from $359 to a rumored $249, and the design, which is angular and slightly awkward (but surprisingly lovely in person), is to be refined. It's also rumored to be much thinner, and have a better screen.
These things make it easier to justify having a Kindle — in addition to my many books, which I'll never give up.

I first heard of Towelhead when I caught a trailer for the Alan Ball-directed film adaptation of Alicia Erian’s novel. The trailer looked like a sweet (perhaps a little bittersweet) coming-of-age story with moments of dark humor. The book is all of these things, but I was not at all prepared for exactly how disturbing it would be, or how utterly sad.

What's not to like about a spunky lil mouse who dons red cowboy boots and has a feisty attitude. Lilly the Mouse has all that and more.
Author Kevin Henkes tells a charming and educational tale in Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse ($11).

Welcome back, Buzz Book Club readers. Last week I was peeved at the main character in the The Wishbones and this week I'd say I'm at about a DEFCON 1 level of frustration. Dave is making some cruel choices and I find myself steaming out the ears.
