I recently read about a clever woman who made her Ikea chandelier into something much more expensive-looking with the addition of some simple, cheap materials.

Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s Paulistano Chair ($1,500) was designed in 1957, but just made its way to the US market from Brazil in 2006. Its frame is a continuous 17-ft. piece of solid stainless steel, shaped to withstand 200 lbs. 
Last night I popped into the Craft Within Reach trunk show in Berkeley, California. A collaboration between Design Within Reach and Craft magazine, the event showcased many local artists and craftspeople displaying their handmade wares. DWR also featured its largest gift selection ever with many items priced under $100.
