Casa Verde: Design-Savvy Green Roof

The School of Art, Design, and Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore was constructed in 2006. Located in a wooded valley, the building is at once spare, modern, and verdant. The building's design was conceived as three intertwining blocks that appear to be natural extensions from the ground. The green roof, which blends with the lawn, is a functional space that is easily accessible via sidesteps along the roof edge. This allows for a scenic outdoor communal space while helping to lower the roof temperature and adding to the green space in the area.

I studied in NTU and they were building that when I finished my undergrad. Previously there was a nice big green lawn with a lot of trees - which seemed like a perfect picnic spot.

But now, there is this. While this architecture is not bad, I do feel sad at the number of trees they had to cut down to make this. My Uni was almost like it was in a jungle, but nowadays it definitely does not feel so.

Also, the climb to the top of the green patch is not easy and is quite steep.

The building is fabulous, but I don't like that they cut down trees to build it, according to Nimbupani. I'd have preferred they built it on a spot that was bare. And green lawns are not eco-friendly, at least not here in the States. They require a LOT of water.

Is this the future we are all deeply longing for or a beautiful and exceptional symbol of green utopia?! I agree with so many of you who have given great comments: like julko and nimbupani i find it very easy to imagine our future living space revolving around this urban ecological and jungle like architecture. But at the same time i feel like there is not enough vegetation...a field of orchids and birds of paradise would have been the cherry on the sundae! Oh well we're on a good start in using our ingenuity! Green is beautiful!!!
