To compensate, I assume, for strict rental apartment regulations, Laura Cattano, who recently gave Apartment Therapy a tour of her Brooklyn one bedroom, discreetly ran a wire from an outlet and then hung her lantern from a hook on the ceiling. It's this kind of rare creative thinking that's crucial in transforming a rental into a home. But, I suppose it's to be expected from Laura, who is a professional organizer.

I did this, too! I strung three oblong paper lanterns this way, in a cluster over my bed. I loaded them with 25 watt bulbs, and plugged them all into one dimmer, which I discretely mounted on the back of my headboard - voila! - instant mood lighting.

I used this trick in my college dorm. Ikea lantern and cordkit! It probably came to about $15
