Before and After: A Squeezed-In Staircase

Designers Gabriella Gustafson & Mattias Ståhlbom from TAF were commissioned by a family in Stockholm, Sweden, to create a staircase in this cramped space.

To see the designers' surprising solution, just read more

The left-side photo shows the staircase looking up, while the right-side photo shows what the stairs look like from the top of the staircase. I love this design, but I wonder if sleepy stair travelers might go bump in the night if they don't pay attention to the pattern of the stairs.

I like it, but then I'd always have to chant to myself, "Start with the right foot, start with the right foot."

gorgeous but I have enough trouble coming down a normal set of hardwood stairs, day or night!

I would rather tackle those stairs than try and do the ladder with an armful of goods Eye-wink I love the way they look!

They look amazing but they'd hardly be useful. I think I'd tumble down them during the day, let alone the night.

i think it looks awesome.. but i also think it is an accident waiting to happen... i could just see someone having a little tooo much to drink, or not fully awake and taking a nice tumble down them! OUCH!

Love it but I have a habit of falling up AND down regular stairs so these stairs would probably kill me!

Oh - I get it. Because you have to go down sideways, right? lol. I was thinking 'How does one even walk on those stairs without looking like a Penguin?'

A fireman's pole might have been just as easy to climb, and at least it would be easier on the way down. This does look amazing, though. Form beats function in this tiny space.

Coming from an interior designer and architecture student, you couldn't build that stair case in the US and use it as a means of egress. You would need and additional staircase that meets code.

It looks cool, and it would be easier to navigate than the ladder.

I would have just installed a spiral staircase - this one looks way too dangerous

That is truly gorgeous but guaranteed I'd break my neck on that thing. I'm not the most graceful - a hand rail would help.

I love the visual aesthetic, but I can feel myself tripping and falling as I look down the stairs.

So gorgeous and innovative! In my old dorm I had a loft section, and there was a slightly slanted but still very steep ladder leading up to it, and since this was freshman year, there were a few drunk nights that could have posed a lot of danger. . .but you get so agile using it after a while that navigating it becomes second nature. I'd guess this would be similar. You'd definitely get the hang of it after a few time. Also, people were mentioning how there is now handrail. . .with our ladder we used the upper rungs to hold onto, and this looks steep enough where you could do the same thing. I LOVE it!

So freakin' cool! And yeah, I think you'd get used to it and not worry about an accident. And it looks so cool!
