Sugar staffer and design enthusiast Nancita wrote in saying,

I could use some advice/bookmarks of ideas. I am looking for some curtain panels in my kitchen. I just need to cover one really big window above the sink; it is at least six feet tall, if not taller. I just want two very simple panels (like the ones they sell at Urban Outfitters) with a pattern that will pick up the colors in the room: a butter yellow vintage table, and a rug with sage green trim. The kitchen has a definite retro vibe, so the curtains should go with that even if they aren't explicitly retro.

I have a gray table just like yours, wish I had the matching chairs!
Kind of agree with chancleta, a soft pastel yellow would be cool.. and maybe dotted swiss curtains? Talk about a vintage look! Maybe dye them in tea for an almond beige color. JMO

I like simple panel curtains too...nothing too ornate and fancy.

I'll have to see what I can find for her!

I like that sage green border on the rug, I'll see what I can find to play off of that. I fear matching yellow walls with yellow table- the wrong shade will make the table look grungy. I think maybe some more sage green and blues would make the table pop out.

My idea would be to look for vintage table linens and repurpose a tablecloth as a curtain. Maybe something not matchy matchy with your beautiful yellow, but complimentary in color scheme and vintage feel. For example, this one is pricey, but there are plenty of things like this at flea markets and antiques stores (hope the link works): http://www.finevintagelinens.com/wtc_victorypinkrose.html

Your kitchen is beautiful--good luck finding what you want for the window.

I agree with using vintage table cloths to make a curtain but I would change it to more of a traditional print. Or you could also buy a lot of vintage hankies and have someone sew all the corners together to make a really funky curtain to go over your sink. Then get some color cordinating plain colored panels for the rest of your kitchen.

Just posted two fabric choices for you--you can find a zillion easy make-your-own curtain patterns/instructions online or in a fabric shop. You don't need a sewing machine. But in that room, and if you really want a colorful treatment, I would do the simplest of treatments.

BTW I would be afraid to paint those walls yellow. I agree with the person who suggested a green as an alternative. Maybe a very pale apple green. But I sort of like the starkness of them, plus I know you could find some inexpensive kitschy art to hang.

Good luck and let us know what you do!

These are all great ideas, you guys! I can't wait to go look at the Casa Cravings you posted.

I like the painting idea, but I actually don't really have permission to paint. Hence, the need for interesting curtains.

PSA: if you tag your selection "Nancita Therapy," it doesn't sort into this group. It needs to be "nancita therapy."
