Do You Shop Craigslist?

I'm on the prowl for a few different types of furniture at the moment, and have been keeping my eyes peeled for that special something on Craigslist. There are masses of new listings on Craigslist each day though, and it's almost a full-time job to sort through them. Like shopping garage sales, it might be a waste of time, but deep down inside I believe that CL will come through for me. What about you?

I think it can be a great way to land a good deal on things! As with anything though, you just have to be wary if something sounds fishy.

I can't imagine what the San Fran listings must be like! The listings for my city aren't too bad; they're at least manageable!

I got a gorgeous set of six continuous-arm Windsor chairs for $250 on Craigslist, and now I'm considering two different sets of corner cupboards. It's a great place to find bargains. Local antique and consignment dealers use Craigslist too.

The trick is searching by keywords and not getting bogged down in the daily lists ... so you have to have something in mind. Browsing Craigslist will kill you!

I got a fantastic solid wood desk from some people off of Craigslist for a really good price. I also once bought my husband yankees vs. red sox tickets at fenway park on craigslist for his birthday.

Every time I'm looking for something new - like a bike or camera or computer, etc. - i check craigslist first. I sell stuff on craigslist too. Much prefer it to ebay. We've even found all our apartments on there, and are using it for our home buying search right now.

I have heard that it is bigger in some cities than in others, though. It rocks Boston!

I can honestly say I've never CL shopped for anything. I like the stores thanks.

If I was looking for an old one of a kind piece I might check out CL but other than that I'm set.

I've looked on Craigslist from time to time, but I'm more of an Ebay girl myself.

There's not a big selection in my city. There are only about six things for sale on a daily basis for furniture. I've never found anything.

I looooooooove CraigsList! I've found a HUGE table and chairs from someone moving - for a steal. I found an (awesome) apartment in SF that way... I found some art - I was looking at in stores - from people moving too - it's good for stuff like that...

I wouldn't buy cushion furniture though - I've heard horror stories about that...

Love CraigsList. Haven't been on recently though... Smiling

I'm addicted to Craigslist. Well, at least searching for stuff. It can be difficult in my city to find something exactly like what you want but I check it daily just in case. And I've had some luck selling miscellaneous items as well - without the fees of eBay.

i thought i'd never buy anything on craigslist, but i was wrong!! a few months ago, i needed to totally furnish my house, and I was on a budget. i checked craigslist and i bought 6 brown leather dining room chairs, a fabulous bookshelf that looks like it's worth $3000 (paid $350 for it), and other items. lucky for me: i found a home stager/interior decorator who wanted to get rid of her props. everything was spotless!!

I've bought a few things on Craigslist & sold a few things as well. Selling can be a bit of a hassle, but overall it's worked out well.

I recently moved from my parents' house into my own apartment and needed a few pieces of furniture. I found a 2 year old, perfect condition Z Gallerie couch on craigslist for $100!! The girl I bought it from was moving to another area of Dallas, and her father had surprised her with new furniture, and she basically just wanted to get rid of the couch! Craigslist is a GREAT place to find bargains! You have to weed through a lot of crap, but I've found awesome stuff on there!

The best thing about craigslist is buying big furniture that people are desperate to get rid of, or very specific items that you'd otherwise buy new. At my old place, we got a big almost-new couch set from a (we think) drug-addicted law student. That was crazy. Plus we got a hauler from CL who totally helped us out for cheap.

We sold alot of stuff on CL before a big move and had alot of success. Now we've bought a house and are starting to look for things to buy. So far we found a wonderful glass top urn table and beautifully four upholstered chairs for our breakfast area. Can't remember the price at this point, but it was a good bargain. We live in a smaller city that gets around 10-20 posts to furniture a day. We found the table and chairs in a listing for a larger city 1.5 hours away that has more activity. It's definitely a good idea to check out the larger cities.

Craigslist in SF is AMAZING. The deals I've found are absolutely unbelievable, plus it's more green to reuse furniture if possible, than buy it all new. I've found:

    • A practically new, mint-condition $3200 Crate and Barrel armoire for $300!
    • A GORGEOUS and large wrought-iron deck set of a table, two regular seats and two rocking seats for $100!
    • A set of three original silk block prints of San Francisco from the 50s for $30--also in perfect condition!
    • I got my two AWESOME roommates off CL!
    • Every time I want to go to a sold-out concert, I can always find an honest soul who can't make it and is selling his/her tickets at face value! In fact I just went to such a concert this past weekend thanks to CL--it had been sold out in two minutes!
    • AND recently I found my amazing new kitten through an ad for the rescue agency on CL Laughing out loud

    THANK YOU CL!

CL is awesome. I've can always get tkts for sporting events, I found my old apt there, I bought a table, bed, sold a hutch, got a petsitter, and most recently purchased a really nice wooden screen and organza curtain for a grand total of $26. Love it!

It just occurred to me while I was apartment hunting a month ago that people sell furniture on craigslist. It's probably like an online flea market, where it may take some scouring to find a hidden treasure.

We do not live in a big town which is very limiting in regard to CL. If I find anything, it's three drive in any direction to get it, so it's not worth it.

This article is funny, I just checked CL out a few days ago. My sister bought something in my area and had me pick it up for her. So I went and looked (haven't found anything yet) and put my bedroom set on there. No luck in selling it yet but it's only been there since Monday. We bought a house last week and I want different furniture. I'll probably look on CL for our new stuff. It's fun to just browse too.

Craig's List is great for furniture! When my boyfriend and I moved in together, we got a couch and loveseat with Sealy down cushions for FREE (free because it took us 2 hours to wedge it out of the previous owner's apartment). And we got a Crate and Barrel dining table and 6 matching chairs for $375. Someone had it for a year and then was moving cross country and didn't want to bother taking it. Brand new it would have been about $1800!

I love craigslist, although the buyers and sellers can sometimes be a bit flaky. However, I love the environmental friendliness of buying used stuff instead of new all the time. Also, if you're willing to check in other areas outside of the area you live in, this is a great tool for conducting searches: http://www.crazedlist.org/. You can also get RSS feeds from it so that you can get updates as soon as something you are looking for is posted.

    I LOVE CL!!! I bought my couch and coffee table from there! (: While I could definitely spend hours browsing the "free" and "furniture" sections, my favorite thing to do on craigslist is troll the missed connections page. I say it's because it's funny, but secretly, I want to be a missed connection!! (;
