Cool Idea: Edible Estates

Tired of a turf lawn? Maybe just tired of all the water it takes to keep the thing green? Then maybe it's time to try Edible Estates, an experimental project by Fritz Haeg, a Los Angeles architect, The project pushes the idea that lawns, which are, in many parts of the world, unnatural groundcover, should be replaced with native plants and edible crops.

Edible Estates have been built in Maplewood, New Jersey, Salina, Kansas, Lakewood, California, and London, England, among other places, and have been funded by donations, museums, and grants. The next Edible Estate will be built in Austin, Texas, over the weekend of March 14th - 16th, 2008.

To see a gorgeous gallery of edible estate photos, and to find out how to apply for your own Edible Estate, just read more

Any inspired gardeners out there want to make your own Edible Estate?

This is awesome! We were just discussing the native plants vs. invasive foreign plants issue (apparently a hotbed of controversy for the discipline) in my landscape architecture class last night!

i love this idea! kudos to everyone whwho is able to do this! why hide your veggie garden when you can show it off?!? but i'm wary of random strangers walking onto my property and picking off things, what do you do about that?

are there any veggies that 'bloom'? to make a floral accent?

I like the idea of using part of your property for veggies, etc...but my kids (not to mention my dog) would be devastated if I took away their entire lawn. I think there's something to be said for a yard that you can spend real time in.

I like the idea of a lawn having a range of turfs, from flower beds, to vegetable gardens, to a plain old lawn. That sounds like a nice yard to me.

I like the idea but kids and pets make it required to have my garden fenced off. I am looking at planting some low water use ground covers up front as an alternative to river rock which is so dull and hot.
