A few weeks ago, I shared some tips on hiring cross-country movers. But I know many people prefer to do their own moving — especially when just relocating across town.

Yes we did. We only moved once since we got married. We had to hire a mover since my husband's a musician and has loads and loads of big equipment and instruments. How else do we move them? Even the largest van or SUV can't accommodate them.

I vowed after moving myself this last time (about a month ago) that I am hiring movers the next time I move.

I've moved to other states 3 times and did it all myself (with the help of some very kind friends and the promise of a nice dinner afterwards) For my recent move I used Penske and they were AWESOME! The equipment was in tip-top shape and the service was excellent too. I highly recommend them if you're moving yourself. Plus, if you're a AAA member, you get a discount!

I also recruit guy friends to help me move and put together furniture by telling them I'll gladly pay them with pizza, good beer, and homemade cookies. It works every single time.

Oh yeah, and I happen to live in Texas, where half the guys I know seem to have pickup trucks, which is definitely helpful when it comes to moving.

Looking back, I really wish I had hired movers! I have a tiny car so I divided stuff up and sent it with various people when they came to my graduation. Some things went with my mom, some with my dad, my aunt, my roommates... I felt like I was using them! And it took forever to organize things. I would definitely hire movers next time.

I've always moved myself. I start packing early and mark every box carefully so I know where to find stuff. I have had friends who hire movers and have had things broken or gone missing all together. It's a lot of work, but I prefer to do it myself. Hiring movers is also out of the budget.

I've used movers before but not this past time. I really wish I had. I forgot how much I hate moving.

Yes, there comes a point when paying movers to move my things is well-worth the headache. I definitely pack my own things, but when it comes to the heavy stuff, I let the movers do all the big items. Moving is a drag and while some of you out there think hiring movers is expensive, you can often find "quality" movers on sites such as "Craig's List." In my opinion, it is money well-spent and it saves on the back!!!!!

I pack my own things, but as far as the heavy lifting, the truck, and all the other headaches, I hire movers. Belive me, it is the best money you will spend. I hate having to ask my friends and no one I know owns a truck. So it is a wise investment!

Next move we'll probably use movers but before we moved this time (into our house) we had always moved ourselves. Moving between apartments, even with an obnoxiously heavy sofa sleeper, is fairly easy, but in 5-10 years moving to another house will probably a totally different situation. We'll still always pack our own stuff-that's no big deal at all!

I'll be fine packing up the truck next time but will probably have to hire help for unloading, as all of my burly friends are here, not whichever city I'll be next. sigh.

My hubby helped me move from my parents house to my own place and when we moved from that place to our condo I was preggers so he and his buddies did ALL the work I just sat on the floor looking cute all round, just reading and drinking water. It was the BEST move EVER! Unfortunately, I'm never getting pregnant again, so I guess I have my work cut out for me next time we move!

I don't, I've got my trusted Uncles to do all the packing and heavy lifting and moving. I've got plenty of those Uncle/All-around-utility-kinda guy relatives.

We have a move coming up next Saturday (condo to house, only 2 miles away). I'm a little on the weak side so I packed every single box light enough for me to be able to lift comfortably. I figure if I can carry it ANYONE can. We have hundreds and hundreds of boxes packed but they're all very light. I've literally been packing for the past three months. I marked each box with what room it will go to along with an itemization of what's inside. We reserved a 24 foot truck with lift and asked about a dozen and a half of our friends to help us move. Our friends on the skinny or weak side can focus on the boxes while our more bulked up friends can focus their efforts on the furniture. We plan on "paying" everyone with coffee, donuts, bagels, bottled water, beer, pizza and dosas (for our Vegan friends) or whatever else they want to order when we're all done plus a promise to help when the shoe is on the other foot. For some of them we are actually cashing in on returned favors

No, I have three brothers and a teenaged nephew, but they took so long, next time I think I will get the professional.

Before I was working full time I always moved myself. It got to the point where moving and all the stress wasn't worth my time. I started hiring movers from there on out, and despite the cost, I haven't regretted it. SO much easier...

Before I was married I lived with my parents. I've only moved 1 time and yes we hired professional movers.

When you're young, it's not so hard to round up help with a move. But once friends start getting married and having kids, forget it. And it's so much easier to just pay professionals to do it. Last move I even had them do a lot of the packing, too. It was so civilized!

when its on someone else's dime, im all for movers, like when i was relocated for work...otherwise, ill do it myself and save some cash

Up until now, we have always done it ourselves. I remember being younger and my parents hiring movers...in college, etc, I never had enough stuff to justify it. However, my husband and I had a miserable experience the last time we moved, and recently got new (VERY, EXTREMELY HEAVY) furniture, and between those two things, have vowed to hire someone the next time, at least to load and unload everything!

I always hire movers, I figure by the time you rent a truck and get your friends butts in gear and bribe them with pizza and beer, it is way more money and time spent to move, plus, then you don't have to help them when they move! Paying movers is worth every penny.

i haven't had to move much, yet. i bought a place and moved into it late last year but it's about 10 minutes drive from my parents' place, where i was living before, and to my shame, most of my stuff is still there. I've just been moving things to my new place as I need them.

Always movers. They really don't cost much, and it's completely worth it. I pack myself, though.

i've used movers twice -once within the city and the other to put our stuff in storage (they crammed everything in so neatly! we would've left half of it out!) it worked out to be cheaper than renting a truck and was of course way less work - especially since a lot of places don't have elevators and i can't life that much. i can never find anyone to help us out. my family members are so unreliable.

I've never used movers because of the $$. But hearing some of you say that it's not as bad as I would think, I'll definitely check it out. Probably up for another move this year. Thanks!!

I move myself but "hire" family and friends by paying them with lunch and beer. Works well, especially with the guys!

movers dont care about your stuff, i have had so many things broken that were Irreplacable. I have also had things stolen.

I just moved.... And it sucked!! I never realize how much crap I own. On one hand, hiring movers seems like a luxury. On another hand, it really isn't that bad if you can round up some friends.

I just round up a group of my strongest male friends (this year, we used all my fiance's groomsmen) and then treat them to baked goods and take them out to dinner afterwards. I wish I could afford to hire movers, but it's just not in the budget right now.
