Before and After: A Cape Cod Crib in Connecticut

This Old House recently featured the home of a Fairfield, CT, family who drastically transformed their 1953 Cape Cod home after enduring serious renovations, including raising the roof to add four bedrooms and two baths upstairs. Shown here is the former living room, with busy, antiquated wallpaper and worn oak floors that certainly don't help to make the space feel larger. With a little paint, some floor stain, an overhaul of the fireplace, and a lot of DIY demolition, the Kuryluk family transformed the room into an airy, modern space that's up-to-date and stylish. To see the after photo, read more.

Impressive, right? To see more before and after photos of the home and hear about their renovation, check out This Old House.

The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no fireplace mantle anymore... or it's just really thin? Otherwise, it's a great renovation!

Wow! It looks so much better, but they still need something on those big blank walls!

um, the floors are still wood? check out the glare right in front of the hearth, between it and the rug. there's also a reflection of the legs of the barcelona chair we see the back of. don't know where the blue is coming from, but it's not the floor.

i agree with 4blankwalls though. they need some more stuff on the walls. that triptych of the brooklyn bridge over the fireplace looks mighty lonely. also, i don't think i'd have painted the walls white.

    that before was horrid though!

Looks good, but the cape probably looked just as good when it was new. 20 years from
now it too will look dated.

I would have kept the wooden mantle. All is needed was for someone to take down the wall paper and update the furniture and decor. I like the new rug a lot.
