Love It or Hate It? Damien Hirst's Spin Art

Despite the fact that much of it conjures memories of school fair spin art, 223 lots of work by Damien Hirst grossed a record $200 million at a Sotheby's auction in London this week. Perhaps you agree with Andy Warhol, who said, "Art is what you can get away with." In that case, you'd snatch up Hirst's spin art in a heartbeat (if you had the dough). But maybe you're not impressed by his work, and you'd rather hang one of your own finger paintings on the wall. Where do you fall?Source

It reminds me of those t-shirts we used to wear in the late 80s/early 90s.. You know, you go to the mall and put puff paint on a t-shirt, then they put it in the plastic bubble thing and spin it around.

I love it. My brother and I used to have one of those toys at home... if only I'd know that our art could have brought in millions I would have saved some of them Eye-wink

Seriously though I do love this!

Well, considering how morbid most of his stuff is, I kind of like the simple colors of the spin pieces. I do wish I had the diamond skull that he did last year - pretty freaking awesome.

Either way, he's laughing all the way to the bank. He looks like he's trying to suppress a giggle in the picture, even.

I think this sort of this is a joke that people are willing to spend so much on this sort of thing. What kind of effort or talent goes into this? Like some others said, I remember making stuff like this when I was like 8.

I understand art "with feeling" type of stuff, and why people would make it, but they are not true artists to me. I am a firm believer that a true artist has a talent(painting/drawing/etc.) that isn't something anyone can just do when they are 5. A true artist has to practice and learn (not just throw random colors on a canvas and call it art) because they have an actual skill. So while I'm fine with people doing stuff like this, I don't think it should be in the same category as art from people with actual artistic skills. When they consider this stuff art it seems like it kind of takes any value away from people that have a true talent.

I don't know, this reminds me too much of the spin art I'd do as a kid!

I like it, but I think it would be more fun to create and display my own spin art.
