IMPORTANT: Pet Food Recall

I am sick and tired of dealing with recalls, after the Oscar Mayer Chicken and the contact lens solution. Now 90 brands of pet food are being tied to kidney failure in cats and dogs. I believe in creating a fit family and that includes the pets!!!

On Saturday, Menu Foods, a Canada-based company recalled 50 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food. This includes pet food made by Iams, Nutro, and Eukanuba.

An unknown number of cats and dogs have suffered kidney failure, and already 10 have died after eating the affected food. As a precaution, Nestle Purina PetCare Company and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. voluntarily recalled some of their pet food that was made by Menu Foods.

The pet foods that were recalled were made with wheat gluten that had been purchased from a new supplier. There is suspicion that this could be the cause, but nothing has been determined yet.

The "cuts and gravy" style products sold in cans and pouches are among some of the affected products. Consumers are being advised to stop using these and the others on the list.

Want to know which pet foods are on the list? Then read more

Menu Foods makes 17 of the 20 top pet foods in the North American pet foods. If you're concerned about which products have been recalled, you can check out the Menu Foods website for a complete list.

Fit's Tips: If you have been feeding your pet any of the foods on the list, and they seem to have a loss of appetite, are vomiting, or just not acting like himself or herself, take them to the vet immediately to get checked out.

This is so sad! I can't imagine my pet just dying because of the food I fed them!

    My kitty isn't a wet-food kinda cat...TG!

Thank God it was wet food!! On my vet's recommendation, I switched my cat to the Nutro dry food a few months ago. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the name listed as one of the infected brands!! What is going on with all our food???

This go me really nervous since my dog is drinking a lot more water lately. But her food is not on the list. I think she is drinking more water cause it is actually warm here and she is black with thick fur.

I know - it's just awful. Definitely tell your friends who have cats and dogs to check their pet food. Good thing my doggie is on the dry Iams - I got really scared when I heard this.

I found out about this on Friday thanks to another pop's post but thought I was okay because they still hadn't listed the brands. So I fed Scruffles the rest of his can of Eukanuba. We threw it away on Saturday when the list came out Angry Mob and he seems okay but last night he was waking up and gagging all night! He seems fine today though. It was his first and only can we gave him but we couldn't find the plant number on the bottom to see if it came from the affected one. Angry Mob

They were really slow getting this out- I found out on pop first! Then the news ran it Sat night, CNN had it Sun afternoon!!!!!!

This exactly why my little Noodle Love is on a raw diet. I can control what goes in his food.

I really hope people open their eyes to what goes into their dogs food. Nutro is an ok brand of food to give your dog. However it is hell of a lot better than Ol Roy (you might as well feed your dog cardboard)

My bf and I were talking about this over dinner. We make a point to give our dog one of the better brands, but even it was on the list (luckily, we give Bobo dry food). We're rather troubled by the fact that it seems like so many different brands are made by one manufacturer. I'm thinking of switching to another brand if I can find one that doesn't have "McIngredients" in it (a la McDonald's mass production--no slight to the Irish).

It's only the wet foods, right? My kitties eat dry food supplemented with the occassional chipmunk/bird/lizard.

Thank goodness my two munchkins won't touch that wet stuff.. I've tried to feed it to them before and they hate it. But sometimes I'll mix a little bowl of their dry food with water to make it soft, and they like that. Smiling

I cried with the lady they interviewed on CNN this morning. I can't bear the thought of something happening to my M&M.

Dog food made from big box companies, like Iams, isnt all that great for your pet anyways. Its better to stick with the more holistic brands like Fromm or Eaglepak... the dog food sold in grocery stores is usally coming from the big box companies. I cant remember the whole reason behind why big stores are bad, something to do with the legallity of the labels, like they have to put on the ingredient label what they used to make the product but not what was used in the process, I.E pesticides, which are not bad for the animal, but the rats and stuff that are killed with the pesticides are not removed and are processed in with the dog food. Im not saying all big box companies do this, but alot do. thats why it is better to stick with stuff u can get from pet stores. And if you noticed, eaglepak and fromm are not on the recall list Eye-wink
