How-To: Share a Closet With Your Main Squeeze

If you've grown accustomed to the relative luxury of a closet space that belongs to you and you alone, it's often a reality check when you move in with a new spouse. Many times, your former sanctuary of neatly hung dresses and perfectly aligned heels is interrupted by the need to share that closet space with your honey's stinky sneakers and college sweatshirt collection. If closet space is at a premium at your home, and you're suddenly splitting one closet's space between two people, there are still ways to get around the possibly distressing mess that this closet can become.

To see my tips, read more.

  • No matter what, try to keep things neat. Don't let clothes collect on the floor of the closet. If one of you is the repeat offender, start fining a quarter per messy item, or better yet, create a system of rewards related to keeping your joint closet clean.
  • Invest in some organizing systems. Ikea has some simple and effective closet systems, and I also love this one.
  • Matching hangers really make a difference, as does organizing them!
  • Figure out what you really wear! Donate all of the clothes you haven't worn in the past year to a charity of your choice. This will free up needed space in your closet, while also benefiting your community.
  • Rotate seasonal clothing. Put Winter clothes in storage, along with some cedar balls to keep away the moths.
  • For some inspiration, check out Haze's closet remodel.
  • Keep stinky shoes (such as you or your honey's running sneakers) in another area, where they won't overwhelm your closet.
  • Consider using a multipurpose piece of furniture for additional storage, such as a Brighton bed, which has coordinating storage drawers that slide underneath.

Ours is doing pretty good. We got a walk-in, but it's not SUPER HUGE. It's ok. I figured out ways to make it work.
Eventually, I wouldn't mind getting a better organizational system when we can afford it...

Ugh, have a big closet if one or both of you are clothes pack rats. My stuff hasn't even arrived from the movers yet, but my hubby's closet seems about 2/3 full and I have more than that.

These are great tips, Casa. My husband is a rather haphazard horder of things but I find that since we redid the closet and the bedroom he's been much neater and less likely to leave his things laying about. Too: I think he follows my lead. If we are really busy with major projects, as we have been this summer, things tend to get a bit messy elsewhere. But I do know that once I have made it right again he will easily return to the more neat and orderly status. It's just the way it is in our house.

I have that same problem Da Ly! I am moving in with my soon-to-be husband in October and he already has stuff in 2/3rds of the closet space! That is stuff is going to have to go somewhere because I have way more clothes and shoes than him! We have a two bedroom with closet space in both but we are clearly going to need some good organization to even make that work. I like the shelf organization items from the Container Store personally... since I live in St. Louis and there isn't an Ikea less than 5 hours away!

Ugh, closets. Our current closet is awful - it's not even big enough for my clothes. My husband never remembers to hang anything up anyway so he keeps his clothes on a chair in the bedroom and it works out somehow ... but when we move next, closet space will be a HUGE deal. I think I'm going to have to think about storing seasonal clothing, though I really don't like that idea.

I have friends who say having separate bathrooms keeps their marriage in good shape ... I think having separate closets might do the same thing for us.

I'm soo thankful for walk in closets, my fiance has one side and i have the other (even though i have a few pieces on his side haha) and I use 3 of the drawers in his huge dresser.

we are possibly moving again in the next couple of months so the next place better have walk-in's or at least a huge closet.
