Recently, I've shared ways to reduce water use in your home. However, if you also have significant water use in your garden, you might want to consider ways to reduce water use around your home as well. One great way to do this is by adding a water barrel, which collects rainwater that falls on your roof. You can, of course, purchase a rainbarrel, but this will run you hundreds of dollars. A more cost-effective choice is to build your own rainbarrel using a food-grade plastic barrel.

We love our rainbarrel! I received it as a mother's day gift just in time to catch all the spring rains we've had in the Midwest. I heard there are workshops in our area where you DIY from an old Coke syrup barrel. So cool to reuse!

What about mosquitos? Mosquitos breed in water and having a collection of water right there will only promote this.

Rain barrels have very fine net covers that water can flow into but mosquitos can't. Our barrel's instruction booklet had a section on mosquitos and how important it is to keep the net cover on at all times.
