Cool Idea: Freecycle

The Freecycle Network is a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement and online community, launched in 2003, made up of 4,528 groups with millions of members across the globe giving and receiving free stuff. The online tool connects people on a local level, via local groups and a local volunteer, so that neighbors can pass along their possessions. As a result of this international sharing, over 300 tons a day of good stuff is kept out of landfills. Membership to Freecycle is free; everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages; and navigating the groups (Yahoo! Groups) is quite easy. To give you an idea of how extensive this network is, San Francisco proper alone has 10,666 active members. Have you used Freecycle? Would you? What items in your home would you give away for free?

IDK, I registered on my local freecycle, but then I got about a zillion emails a day notifying me of new and taken (WTF?) objects. It's too fast-paced for me, I think I'll stick with the free section on craigslist.

I've been a member since about 2004, and kept loads of things out of the landfills -- household items, furniture, craft items, clothes, linens, toys, books, tools, garden supplies, you name it -- I list it and somebody wants it! What doesn't get snapped up I donate to local thrift shops. I rarely get items as I'm trying to de-clutter, but recently I got my daughter a used sewing machine as she expressed an interest in Project Runway and started drawing her own designs. Hovering over her with my precious sewing machine was too stressful for both of us (she's 8.5) so this old clunker (that still works beautifully!) is a blessing! Word to the wise: if you aren't interested in accepting items, get the digest version as usually there are tons of posts flooding your inbox. But if you are looking for items, don't subscribe to the digest. Also, when responding to offers, be clear about when you can pick up with a time and day, and try to email a contact number as well.

I've used it both to give and to get. I gave away things from my college apartment that I didn't want to move home. I've picked up a couple boxes of books. I don't get e-mails at all anymore. I just visit the site about once a week or when I have something to list.

I love Freecycle! I've given away trashbags full of clothing and some furniture. It's been a great way for me to get rid of items w/out having to throw them away.

freecycle is such a great way to get rid of all of your old college furniture to make way for your new stuff. I have been using since the site started!

I will definitely check it out. I have a lot of stuff that I'd like to get rid of. After the yard sale I'll try to get rid of it on there and then the rest will go to Goodwill.

I've used it. I got a nice file cabinet & I gave away a microwave. It's a great idea since it keeps stuff out of landfills.

I love freecycle. I have given away so much stuff, moving boxes are always on there and I have given a ton away as well. I also got a collection of Bon Appetit Magazines (5 years worth off of it), I love to cook, so I was so happy when that came on!

Freecycle is awesome. Great way to reduce the things you don't need by letting someone reuse them!

Freecycle has its ups and downs where I live, but all in all it's a great way to clear out the clutter.

I've given away SO much stuff on freecycle. The only thing that I have ever taken was a kitten for my grandmother (who, it must be pointed out- peed on my bed when I got her home.) Sticking out tongue

I love freecycle! even if I do get up to fifty or more emails a day (might have to change that actually). I haven't taken anything (yet- I've seen some tempting items!), but I did give away some extra seedlings I had.

Freecycle is pretty good in my area (Long Island/NYC). I have received free items and offered free items. It's really cool! I love using freecycle (and Craigslist!) lol
