What better book to review during June, when our theme is focused on eco chic living, than Emily Anderson's wonderful guide Eco-Chic Weddings? Since I'm trying to plan my wedding as DIY and green as possible, I knew that Anderson's book was a must-read for my planning. With simple, quick, and often economic ideas for making your ceremony and reception more eco-friendly, Eco-Chic Weddings was just the thing I needed to both inspire new ideas and reinforce other plans I'd already made. For instance, Anderson's suggestion to skip save-the-date cards made me feel environmentally responsible and modern, instead of irresponsible (some other guides had insisted that STDs were a must). Other tips include using in-season flowers, taking advantage of local food and resources, and renting items that won't be used after the wedding. Anderson, a former Martha Stewart staffer, is already at work on a second Eco Chic book. For now, catch up on all of her great ideas in her first book, which you can purchase here. For any bride who's concerned about eco entertaining, I highly recommend this book — it's a great resource for all of your eco-chic bridal needs.

This sounds like a wonderful book. I plan to donate my wedding dress after I get married. I still want the thrill of picking out my dress and it being new, but I think it is ridiculous to save it forever. If I ever have a daughter she for sure wont want to wear for her day because fashion changes all the time. Anyhow, I would donate it because maybe someone in need cannot afford a wedding dress or a store such as Salvation Army could sell it to someone who's artisitc and wants to turn it into something else; either way less is wasted.

Yay! I'm so happy to see you love her book, and excited to say I actually met Emily Anderson of Eco-Chic Weddings this weekend in New York City for a wedding bloggers luncheon hosted by Brides.com! She was super nice, and shared some great eco friendly wedding advice with all of us. If you want, I've posted pictures of the event on my personal page - with details & more...it was SUCH an amazing experience!!! I wrote about it on my personal wedding blog - "It's A Jaime Thing"...check out my page for the link if you're interested. Smiling

Not only did I get to meet Emily Anderson, the author of Eco-Chic Weddings, but I also met the editor-in-chief of Brides.com Michelle Preli, famous wedding gown designer Angel Sanchez who designed Eva Longoria's wedding gown, Anne Chertoff of iVillage, along many fabulous wedding bloggers! It was awesome!!! Hopefully I get to meet the Sugars someday too! But we'll take it one day at a time. Baby steps, right? Smiling

Anyhow, yes - Eco-Chic Weddings is an EXCELLENT book, with a super sweet author. Eye-wink

    Have a lovely day!

Tdamji, one thing that we did was register for charities that we support. Does your cousin have a cause she's passionate about? A donation in her and her husband's name might be a nice present (and of course present her with a beautiful card and certificate stating as much). Another idea is to see if you can find greener choices for some of the things she's registered for (instead of towels, get organic towels, etc.) If you get her something that's thoughtful, beautiful and eco-minded, it'll be much appreciated, I'm sure.

I haven't read the book, but I love the Eco-Chic website! Trying to be green with an event as big as a wedding can be very hard. But I'm happy to say I just hired on a green event consultant (www.zahzoom.com) to help with the Big Day. We're trying as many cuts as possible -- promoting Terra Pass offsets on our wedding website, reusing the bridal bouquets as centerpieces (w/ potted plants) to donate to a hospital after, tree-free invitations with as little packaging as possible! Not only does it help cutback on any waste from an event this big, but it will also make our wedding unique and a bit less expensive on some items. Yay!

Casa -- congrats, and good luck on all the DIY! Congrats to justjamie as well Smiling

Great book! Picked this up, copied down the information that I was truly interested in then sold about 2 monts later to a used bookstore. Now, it's not a statement on the book itself that's the reason I sold it, I just don't think that that book is something that should be kept exclusively to one's own personal library.

While there's a lot of really good information in there, a lot of it struck me as common sense that sometimes astonishes me that people really need to read it in words to recognize it's useful: ie. recycled paper for wedding invitations or just reducing the amount that needed to print.

However, for those without any green-savvy in them, I think this is something that needs to be picked up—-and passed on to the next green bride when you're done with it.

I'm doing using as many local resources as possible, including the flowers, which I'm just going to pick myself in a field. Wildflowers are much more interesting than sterile, genetically-engineered roses picked by borderline slaves in Columbia.
