Before and After: My Garden's Blooming!

A while ago, I showed you how to build a garden box and plant it.

Here's how my garden first looked after I planted seeds and seedlings in it.

To see how it's growing, read more.

It's definitely taking off! I had to add a trellis to support some vining cucumbers and peas, and will have to add more supports for my vining plants soon.

While this garden may look chaotic, I've found that planting a variety of veggies and herbs and flowers in one space has a number of advantages. First, you can group more plants into a small space, depending on whether they're growing up (peas) out (squash) or down (beets). Also, by mixing up plants, there's less of a chance of them all getting attacked by insects or a disease. And finally, when I pull up a row of beets or cut off a head of lettuce, I can immediately put in another seedling or row of seeds to replace that part of the garden that's been used.

Wow, it looks delicious. I have to say my little plants (I only planted strawberries & tomatoes.) don't look nearly so lush. I noticed that chipmunks are eating the flowers off the strawberry plants on a regular basis. Sad Hope the fruits of your labor give you a yummy summer!

Wow! You have a fantastic garden there! Great idea with replacing the plants as you pull them up too. I'm sure you'll be enjoying the fruits [and vegetables] of your labor soon.

Our growing season has really just begun so I'm quite envious. But I did catch the first itty-bitty tomato coming in on Mr. Tomato Head.

    Thanks for the compliments! Smiling

Jennemmy, I was reading up on chipmunks and strawberries, and apparently the best thing you can do is try to use a live trap for the chipmunks and "rehome" them to a different area. Netting can help for birds, but chipmunks are much harder to deal with! Another option is to try to do container gardens of strawberries on a sunny porch or deck, where you can patrol the area a little better.

I LOVE SEEING MY LITTLE PANTS GROW. I GET HAPPY WHEN I SEE THEM GROWING. AND SAD WHEN THEY DIE.. ESPERCIALLY HERE IN MIAMI. THE SUN IS HOT HOT HOT SO I HAVE TO WATER THEM EARLY MORNING OR LATE AFTERNOON. BC IF I WATER RIGHT AFTER WORKED THEY BURN.
